Bollockwort or Orchids

Was in the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens today and there is an exhibition in the house in the middle.

There was some artwork that included orchids, and middle English name for an Orchid is a Bollockwork.

Quite literally a “testicle plant”. Orchids have two tubers under the ground that look like testes, whilst the flower does look rather phallic.

Indeed the common name Orchid derives from the Greek “orchis” which means testicle.

Up herein Scotland we do get lots of orchids and they are one of delights of being out in the Spring and Summer. Next time I see one I will rather chuckle.
