Boot Recommendations

Hello Everyone

Getting to that time of year, new boots are inbound. Have always had the meindl dovres, however can't say I am particularly impressed with the quality of them lately. Anyway we're getting to choose this year, so.

Any recommendations for a decent pair of hill boots that will last a bit longer than the dovres. Cheers.

I have the Dovres and wasn't impressed. In the past I was a big fan of the Scarpa SL but they have since replaced them with boots with "features" and they are completely useless and have a life of about a fortnight if you are out every day, don't ask how I know this.

The best I've found recently, and obviously I haven't tried everything available, have been the Altberg Mallerstang. I currently have two pairs and they have been relatively robust and sensible for use on the hill. They aren't high leg like the Dovres but that doesn't bother me and I wear gaiters anyhow. One pair of Mallerstangs that I had were very prone to chewing through laces until they broke but they stopped doing this after a while. I also have a pair of the Altberg Tetehra and they are also decent boots that are perfectly fine but not as sturdy and supportive and so I'd say not as good for hill use.

Just realized there were questions above that I didn't answer...

The Tibet EVO sole comfort spec is now the same as the Hunter EVO's, along with improved structure in the ankle area.

The difference between the Tibet Hi and the Lowa Hunter EVO is that the Tibet does not have the Primaloft insulation layer, the design and colour are also slightly different, the Tibet is a darker leather.

Tibet's have always flown under the radar compared to the Lowa Hunter, however they have a strong following by those "in the know"

I use the Lowa hunters and find them good, I don't wear them every day so that's the difference for me.
Find them warm, waterproof and good support, and I would buy them again from Rob if needed.

Karrimor SF (not the high st karrimor brand) cold wet weather boots is my usual answer having had a lot of wear out of mine. But I see now a new or basically new pair is nearly £100. Still very decent for the money but harder to find a good pair. Expect they are being used round the world in actual cold wet weather…

Thanks, how do you find the insole? Really its durability that would concern me.

If you want a high boot check out the altberg Raby.
I’ve had rabys for about 10 years now. They used to be called gamekeepers, they’ve always been excellent and very comfortable. I’ve had 3 pairs in that time, I’ve never actually worn a pair out but had to retire the first pair after sitting a little too close to a fire in Sweden and melting the midsole.
I really rate them and they’re a bit of kit I wouldn’t want to be without, I’ve worn them from Sussex to Alberta, the limestone alps of Bavaria (very slippy when wet!) and northern Sweden in -14. They’re excellent.

Other good boots to look at are Meindl Island pro, don’t seem to be affected by the sole issues the douvre has, also great boots.ive had a pair of these on rotation for daily wear with the alters for just over 2 years

Interesting. How long have you got out of them, with how much regular use.

As for durability, mine spend time probably 10% of the time stalking, the rest is me walking g around on the farm, busy beef farm so lots of cow **** and wet grass. I average 14,000-20,000 steps a day in them hence why I choose good boots. Welly’s and dealer boots give me a really bad back.

Had mine 7 years, still going strong. Very comfortable for me.

I bought a pair of Lowa Tibets back in 2018 from Monarch. They are good boots for everyday use, but for me not really stiff enough for really steep mountainous type terrain. But on flatter ground they are very comfortable. Linings are now going and sole is beginning to collapse. I don’t wear them all day every day, but worn several times a week when out stalking or taking dog for a walk etc.

If I am going to be on steep ground I use a full on stiff mountain boot - La Sportiva Karakorum - but these are too stiff for on the flat.

Haix High Liability. Comfortable and very durable. They're also much less expensive than many of the named brands above.

Ideally looking for an all rounder as cover most types of ground, so that's quite helpful, thanks.
