Butollo Callers - Any good?

buttolo
you can use it one handed from your pocket whilst tracking a moving deer with the rifle up on sticks!

So are you suggesting that maybe as a "long term thing" it might be well worth while investing in both for serious Roe Stalking? And are they more effective during the rut or are they likely to work throught most of the year - Obviously taking into account the closed seasons for bucks and Does.

Well I've got a Nordic, and a butollo, and was thinking of getting a cherry aswell. As long-range-rob says get Onto bush wear and get the butollo with the DVD, very informative. Best results are coming up to and during the rut.

Reading this with interest, but I can't help but wonder what you guys are trying to achieve by varying the pitch? Do you all know what noise you are trying to immitate? I have never heard a fawn call or a doe peep, but I know damn well that the buttolo call makes bucks come running to me. Last year I shot a silver medal buck that I had to call through a boundary hedge to get on my side (yes I know!). It was downwind and knew full well that I was a person and was standing just behind the hedge, but it just couldn't resist the noise of the call. It stood 20yards on the other side of the hedge and barked at me for 15 minutes before I eventually gave up and walked away (still calling), before it came through the hedge and tried to follow me. This was one of 5 bucks that week that came charging into the buttolo, and I've had similar results in previous years.
Can anybody point me to a recording of a doe actually calling?
Does the varying sound/pitch of the cherrywood call actually deliver better results when calling deer or just sound 'better' for the stalker?

tree horse i dont use a buttolo but have a rotumtaller which is a reed type call it varies the pitch dependant on what you want to do, sometimes a buck won't respond to a call but if he has a doe in toe doing a high pitch quite feep on the call to imitate a young kid the doe will come in bringing in a buck it does depend on the situation. I have listened to does and kids together varying different tones and have got those down to a tee but i have only heard bucks using alarm calls I have found also varying success with bucks due to being fired up after a chase they tend to come steaming in and others come in more cautious, atb wayne
