Calibre specific mod

morning,

Just got a 404 so barrel will have same thread, I can have .22CF, 6.5 and .30.

My question is, do I need to buy a mod for each calibre or if i buy one .30 mod will that suffice, does it make a huge difference the 2.5 mm difference between the .22 and .30?

TIA

I have a 30cal mod that I used on my 300whisper and my 223. It works as good as the dedicated 223 mod (on the .223 rifle of course;)) to my ears with the same ammo.
I'm sure if you use a meter it'll show some difference, but I would think the sonic crack would be the biggest problem on the 223.

Various thoughts and opinions. Edinburgh Rifles did tests and I think results seem to suggest noise reduction was better with calibre specific mods. However 2 other firearms dealers said they recommend going bigger. My personal thoughts are, surely no manufacturers would list a 6.5 calibre mod if it wasn't best suited to a 6.5 rifle

I shoot .223 through a wildcat 6.5mm mod and the sound reduction is adequate for what I want. I also have shot 6.5 through .30 cal mod and that works. Im not sure there is a discernible difference - it’s measurable for sure, but enough difference to make a difference in the field? I haven’t found it to be so.

Just buy the 30 cal mod and try it on the smaller calibres to see.
I'm sure it will be fine but if your not happy you can then buy more if needed

Calibre specific is IMHO better, but manufacturers tolerances, screw cutting accuracy, etc can affect whether a sub-calibre mod is still safe. For example, I'm using a 6.5 on my .243, a 30 cal on my .270 and 30 cals on my .308s. However, I have used the 6.5 on the .270 but, as its an older non-titanium core I went to 30 cal titanium for the .270 as its a fast load. What I did do a while back after I found myself with a shot-out 30 cal mod with none of the other 30 cal mods being suitable thread-wise was to get the replacement in M18 and to buy a set of adapters from Dauntsey guns to cover off the M14, M15 and 5/8x24 threads I have on the rifles so I can now use any of the 30 cal mods on all of the CF rifles that I have. With mods hopefully coming off ticket soon, such precautions shouldn't be necessary but this arrangement has worked well for me.

Interesting thread. I guess the calibre specific mod is likely to control gas outflow after the bullet better, but then again the larger calibre mod might have a bigger expansion chamber and better baffles to control what is likely to be larger amounts of combustion products for a bigger cartridge. Bet there isn't a simple answer!

I did much the same with adapters for an Aimzonic mod in .30 cal. Adapters are not cheap for what they are but saves the expense of lots of mods

like anything....
Not all 30cal mods are equal....

30cal bore diameters range from 8mm to 9.2mm
on a 7.62mm bullet diameter that clearance at the upper end dramatically reduces sound attenuation
Some of the baffle designs are better than other and can negate the radial clearance
Some dont.....

I plan to renew this review with a updated suite of moderators now available

Just be aware that unless your FAC refers to a moderator relative to the chambering you intend to install it on you do not have authority to use it on said rifle. Point being, if you have authority to aquire and use a moderator for a 308 it does not mean you can stick it on every other calibre rifle in your cabinet.

That this may change in the months or years ahead is irrelevant.

Why not buy a Wildcat and just swap out the baffle stack?
In.my case .20 .223 .243 .6.5 .308.
All bits interchangeable so.ife is a doddle.
