capstan winch cheap version

Interesting idea here:

Substantially overpriced for what it is but maybe time to head for the workshop :-| @Tim.243 thoughts?
Shoot smaller deer is the best option for the op lol
The amount of gain on that bit of kit looks very toy town with it being no more than a gadget tbh Peter.

Have made a Mk2 tow bar hoist for the D-Max which breaks down into 3 parts also made a fitted bar for a small 12v winch that will live in the front of the tub to pull the 200amp welder up ramps as I have retired the heavy welding trailer☹️

Could a big 40 tonner ratchet strap mechanism not be repurposed to run rope through it on some pulleys like a the £900 jobbie? Slow but cheap.

Agreed - friction of the sliding element would be critical to effort. However, having been a user of hi-lift jacks for decades, there is some potential I think.

Retrieve speed in PCW3000 video looks very slow. Especially when you take into account it's shot with smartphone that has wide angle lens (so distances look longer). I'd check if rope is suitable for the winch, routed properly and adequate tension kept while retrieving.

Talking about retrieve speeds, please forget the drill driven and small drum type winches if you have any distance. PCW3000 seems to be rated for 26 feet per minute i.e. 8 meter. Portable electric winches might be rated for 3 meter per minute (no load) to 1 meter per minute (full load).

Tractel is nice find, basically Tirfor type winch but soft rope instead of steel. They don't give retrieve speed but it looks like 10-20cm per handle movement.

Talking about steel rope, if you insist on drill driven options, best one might be Pulley Man. It works on the same principle as capstan and Tirfor, i.e. rope just goes through it so pull strength and retrieve speed are not variable. It's rated for 300kg (vertical) lift and 3.75 mmp full load retrieve on single line.

@Tim.243 - I'm in a similar position. I have a 13500lb winch in the front of my truck and a 2000lb one in the back with I use with my demountable towbar hoist to lift and load carcasses. I'm also carrying now about 150m rope with an ascender to allow sectional pulls up a steep woodland slope. I'd love a PCW3000 but candidly with the above and my quad, I'm well placed 😁

You are turning into the Deer RAC lol

It's the towing the quad I don't want rather travel light just think the price of capstan is bit dear for a gearbox with a year warranty. Is there no1 else that's made somthing up at a price for the less privileged

Just thought that It might be in the greater interest of some of us less fortunate members on here if there was somthing else out there. As it appears I'm a poor man trying to do a rich man's game

Very good point the rope was in fact a semi static climbing rooe so not ideal it stopped and started in little verky movement the entire time.

Also the winch was on half throttle if you go into my channel you'll see a very much bigger red being brought in much faster with the proper winch no stretch rope, also in full throttle this time very much faster in fact this is as fast as you'd want it given getting hung up ect.

Retrieve speeds for PCW winches, based on data from one of the suppliers:

Petrol PCW3000 10 metres per minute
LI battery PCW3000 11.6 metres per minute
Petrol PCW5000 12 metres per minute (18 metres per minute with larger optional drive drum)

Has anyone found a supplier of a version of the pcw3000 gearbox and spool at a reasonable price?

I would guess 10m per minute about right for the 3000 petrol unit, and it's way more powerful than you'd believe or need for any deer on these islands,.

I've used mine for timber extraction also and it never ceases to amaze me and anyone with me with it's capability.

Something else of note its easy to get parts for in the event of damage or failure a very important consideration for the long haul.

All in it was very much worth the investment.
