If it's any interest to anyone, I'm not sure how to post a link, but if you type "petrol powered capstan winch shed project" into google and click on the first photo, its a post by a guy in NZ who is made a similar project. (At least that's how it works on my iPad)

I have been following this thread with interest as I thought how useful it would be to have a capstan winch. By total coincidence I was working on a chaps tractor today and sat in the shed was this covered in dust. Had a word and picked it up for £25! It works really well though not sure how powerful it will be, I should think it would be fine for carcass recovery but not vehicle. I may put a petrol engine on it or get an inverter (which I have been wanting for a while anyway) what do you recon? What rope do you guys advise for this type of small winch? 8mm braided rope has a breaking strain of 1000kg which seems more than enough, but does the small diameter have disadvantages?

looks good liongeorge should work a treat. looking on flea bay at post hole augers as they have a gear box already fitted just crying out for a pulley, I can see loads of these diy jobs about to start lol, atb wayne

I use the following winch, fully portable and runs fine using a small little 12volt battery. It only has 15m of cable so I attach to a larger length of rope via a prussik system. It’s quick to just put it into free spool and run it out in 15m lengths. I only use a handful of times a year so works well for me. Plus its rated to 2000lb on a straight pull so can be used to pull the truck out if needed.

I have a capstan chainsaw winch but to be honest a 8mm no stretch rope and climbing recovery block and tackle is more useful and lighter
