Carrying deer without getting covered!

I like a roe sack, carries gear and emergency stuff and an old cammo sleeping bag poncho.
use it as a rest for shooting. But you dont have to carry a roe deer , you can wrap it in a tarp,
rope it and drag it..... easier than a red deer
like the look of the yool sack, ikea bags are good for your vehicle

there is another thread somewhere that shows this, i think like taff said notch one leg ,cut the other so its like a t shape then slip through the notch,in other words its like a toggle and loop on a duffle coat?

I have seen a leather sling with 4 loops attached that go on the legs.You then pop the deer on you shoulder like a handbag (or something similar that is more manly obviously ).

I've had a look on t'internet but can't find one currently but i think it's an old german design.

I had this one made up by a local saddler after I'd tried and failed with the G Kenneth Whitehead design.

It works well (I carried out a doe using it just this morning) but you still get blood on your trousers/jacket. Some sort of shield between the carcass and you would be useful - a plastic bag or similar.

Can't remember where I saw it but someone using a 20 inch long leather strap with lashings on either end which loop onto the legs of the deer to carry it upside down like a big handbag.

Although I mostly shoot fallow I like every other stalker have the same problem and hate carrying a roe sack. But I find other than take some one with you to carry the beast, the best solution is to bleed it well and try to be more careful when you gralloch and hang a for a short while subject to weather. It sounds simple but it helps. Tom

I've got a Paul Harris sling similar to that, and yup, still get blood on me too!

Useful for keeping your hands free though, or can be used to carry a kid whilst you drag a doe.

for me a roe sack or drag in scotland if i hocked a deer and carried i would have hundreds of ticks in seconds.
on the west coast you have to see how many to believe it at home yes no ticks no problem, do whatever suits your ground, ps i now after cooling the deer down i use medical body bags to transport to keep all the nasty critters inside, try explaining keds on your person whilst having a dinner do it does not go down well and even worse ticks in the nether regions,atb wayne

I'm not sure you won't get covered as the the OP requests but the reason I'm particularly interested in it is that my extractions are now typically a lot shorter down here than previously up North in the hills (maybe just to the edge of the crop fields to where we can get the vehicle) and I am going to try this method without gralloching them which I'll leave til the larder. So I have just made such a strap but because I'm tight and didn't have suitable leather to hand made it out of an old wide seat belt and a strong ruck-sack belt buckle we had lying around. It should be good for fallow and roe. I'll let you know how I get on and try and post a photo but the thing I like about it is it wraps up tiny in the pocket when not in use and can go in the washing machine.

I used to carry all my deer out, only had roe back then. I used a piece of rope to tie the front legs to the back legs and tucked the head between the front ones. Always carried them with the exit hole away from my body, you get a bit of blood on you but not that much.

Not sure if there is a solution but just In case some one has come up with some ingenious way of carrying roe out with out (without spending lots on a roe sack) getting covered in blood?

First, do you know how to make a bambi-backpack? If so, all you need is a rain slick and you are set. Additionally, make sure you have the hood up. Additionally, the slick protects against ticks.

I tend to take the legs off and tie the head to the foreleg strap to stop bobbing around

Bruce Potts did an article in shooting Times on a strap carrier, simple leather belt with para cord loopes x2 each end. I use an Uncle Mikes call carrier which I moddified. Simple and takes up v little space in a pocket.

Hi , My friend who shots muntjac and cwd with me came up with a good idea , he has a length of rope about 1m long ,ties the front legs together with one end the back legs together with the other end of the rope, then puts the deer in a bin liner and put the rope over the shoulder , end of the day put the bin liner in the bin . If you use like the 6m blue rope which is easy to get , as soon as that gets dirty put that in the bin as well.

All good ideas but I can see one problem TICKS my worst nightmare , if having to walk a long way back to my van some times I have to stop and check that there not crawling out the top of the roe sack .

Similar to Long_Range_Rob but tie all four feet together with a short length of cord and hang over your shoulder. As long as you have not made a bloody mess of the outside of the carcass you will manage easily.
