CF2 Date of Manufacture

I have a CF2 that I am trying to date. I know the production range for CF2s was 1972-1986 and I am familiar with the Birmingham proof mark with the crossed sceptres. But after very thorough examination, I can’t find that mark anywhere on the rifle’s metal. Is this the only correct way to date a CF2? Am I missing something?

Post the serial number (or Pm me) I have John Knibbs Book 'The Golden Century' (he has all the factory records for BSA ). He specialised in airguns but RF and CF are included in the index .
