Christmas Fishing Tips

Merry Christmas everyone 🎄

We’re off on a little trip between Barmouth and the Dyffi estuary. Father Christmas has been very generous and the boys want to test their new tackle (everything from mackerel flies to tope hooks), any suggestion of where to go for a few casts? Ideal would be spinning for bass, my pal has suggested off the wall at Aberdovey or into the surf on the beach. I’m a complete novice and only go because the boys love it. They are only 6, 8 and 10 so the easier the catch the better rather than trophy fish.

April and August best for bass.

My suggestion would be a bottom bait on size 1s with black lug, tipped with a bit of squid for a cod/codling or whiting for a bite.

Tight lines and wrap them up warm👍 - the wind today is evil.

Best rig is a weight at the bottom, then a snood about 12” up and another one 18” above that one, with a 1/0 hood or smaller. Alternatively, just put a set of mackerel feathers on and add bait. To make life easier, buy a mackerel from a supermarket, fillet and slice the bait at home, put the strips in a zip top food bag and take that to the harbour wall - less faff and no need to carry or use a knife. Enjoy!
