i was looking at a blazer on saturday in a gun shop , not the horrid straight pull thing , a lovely break barrel single K95 i think , it had plastic furniture and was delightful until i saw the price ! My vision went a bit and i got a bit giddy but i am sure it said £4800 for it in 6.5 creedmoor !

Good to see deer stalking covered in such a popular programme even though it is a bit of a taboo subject.
I was surprised by the persistence of the BDS guide saying shoot, shoot so often. I was also surprised that he didn't try and stop the deer on the track with a whistle or a shout. I wouldn't be happy with the guide if I was a novice being taken out for the first time. I felt that him saying shoot, shoot so often would put pressure on the shooter when they might not be ready.

My first impressions where, it looked good to let a deer pass without a shot being fired, for TV. Not just “blasting” everything, I think it was quite clever.

That was my thought too, after I’d got off the edge of my seat and stopped shouting “shoot man!”. I also think the Bambi thing was also proving a point as they still carried on eating even after an ‘aahhhh’ from some of them. The BDS chairman may have given some good input verbally that is on the cutting room floor so JC could put it across. To be fair more people are likely to listen to JC.

Episode 7 new series 3 of Clarksons why deer need to be culled and getting people eating venison, very good in my opinion.

Already creating conversations in non shooting communities, just need to see more of it!

I'm mentoring some new stalkers (two this year) both good shots on the range but when it's pulling trigger on beast, they freeze. I did when started.

I thought the BDS fella missed an opportunity, it would also have been a good window into how deer become food ..

Hugh van Cutsem, the charity's Chairman would have, I'm sure tried to but remember - in TV first you have to get it past the Director and, even if they give you a take it's got to survive not ending up on the cutting room floor in the edit

Within stones throw of the farm so know it well.
Shame they didn't get onto the Fallow issue that crosses from bordering property, could have minimised the crop damage suffered .
The program does make it an issue to shoot on the farm, as any stalker may get put into the Anti's spotlight, so seeing JC allegedly taking that shot may have been best option.

The exploding steel targets made me laugh and my suspicion is that Clarkson didn't actually pull the trigger on the deer. It's a show after all and perhaps all the "Shoot shoot FFS Shoot!" stuff is all about the drama of it. I said to my wife that it wouldn't surprise me if Clarkson decided not to go for the buck after all and that actually the venison they offered in buns was from another animal. Not everyone wants to pull the trigger however much they think they ought to. Good episode - my wife also said that I was an utter nerd when I pointed out the model of the rifle....
Like @GIMLET61 says, I also know that area and there are a LOT of fallow about. So it's odd they picked on the roe rather than the fallow...
However, small beginnings and all that.

I thought it was really good, positive exposure. I do agree that he could have talked a bit more about the 'whys', but he may well have done for all we know. They cut tons out at the editing stage of these sorts of productions. I also think they should have shown the deer going down. Hiding people from the reality of it doesn't educate. In some ways it may make them even more sensitive because they assume it must be horrific and they must be protected from it at all costs. Ultimately, there would be complaints, sure, but it's not illegal, it's not like he doesn't include footage that many object to already, and I think it actually left out quite an important element of it (that it's all over in the blink of an eye and perfectly humane).

From series one I have been saying to my partner "why aren't they shooting those deer in the cut scenes and selling them in the farm shop"...when they did get to it in series 3, it felt like it only had a few minutes of screen time.

In all countries where fieldsports have been protected it's because they concentrate on their citizens right to hunt and enjoy hunting. In France and Spain they also protect bullfighting and cockfighting, no to mention badger digging....they are protected as a right and a cultural heritage. All this 'we shoot to manage deer' or 'pest control' makes me laugh.

Some varied opinions here about the deer shooting on Clarkson's Farm. Yes, there are differences of opinion on which reasons should be presented on why deer culling is necessary. And the bloodier bits of the exercise, both in the field and at the butchers were strangely missing.

However, the portraying of a deer being taken and ending up as food is a leap forward despite the only chopping being on the cutting room floor. Well done is what I say! I wonder how many complaints it might have got.

Only just starting on the show so not yet watched the deer episode, however I have just watched the cattle/badger/TB episode and in only a few moments he exposed the utter nonsense that is our approach to this horrendous issue. Anyone watching will now be well informed on just how bad government policy on this important issue actually is and how much (£180m) it costs you and I to fund and perpetuate the nonsense.
For that at least he deserves some recognition.

We have also all been there killing our first deer and I distinctly remember some regret pre and post shot

In full agreement with the positive vibes. Really nice to see, stopped short of the shot/gralloch but that’s likely a good thing nowadays. H Van C came across really well, knowledgable and passionate. Brill.

I agree with you on the reasons why deer need to be controlled and that the focus needs to be on those.

But we have a huge percentage of the population who follow the reintroducers etc and support the 'well if we need to reduce the numbers, just bring back the wolf' argument or contraception for example. The majority aren't passionately in favour of these ideas but they are swayed by the passion of the 'influencers' because there are not enough messages getting across that these simple solutions are not that simple.

So I think we should seize any opportunities to convey to a large audience the other side of the coin. It only needs a couple of seconds just to sow the seed.

I couldn't agree more. It also need to be a two pronged approach. Pointing out the ecosystem and biodiversity benefits while also highlighting that there's no other (nor better) way of doing it. And if these people think it's not nice for a deer to be taken with a quick, clean shot and would prefer it being mailed to death by a natural apex predator, it only highlights much of their ignorance! Shooting is extremely humane, it's just that guns and shooting as a whole have been actively demonised over the past 50 years. That needs work too.
