Community Larder

That's a real shame - a larder around your area would have been really useful
Actually a bit ****ed off about it. BASC talk a lot about community larder funding but in essence it doesn’t exist.

If we are planning to make a difference to deer numbers because the government want to then there needs to be some investment.

I get the potential for a few people to fund it but it’s either a big chunk of money or a lot of people before you get to that sort of money - and then how do your structure it?

Agreed.

Good idea for people to fund it, but you don't want to be the person trying to manage it.

I don’t want to sound my usual doom and gloom self but j am not surprised, sounded too good to be true from the word go!

Perhaps what is really needed are local FOC rendering plant drop off points that those with no ability to process, sell or store carcasses may simply leave for such disposal.

But again this is all about how committed Government actually are to a massive deer population reduction throughout the Lowlands and nothing at all to do with the promotion of venison sales.

Better still, just hack the back end off and leave the rest at the shot site along with gralloch for the vermin precious predators.

Venison is ending up as dog food in many cases.

Certainly getting that way, prices and weight classes per species are giving a very low return.

I doubt that properly presented, clean carcases, are ending up as dog food. Consumer demand for venison seems pretty good right now.
The fact that some stalkers are dumping dog food quality carcases with their game dealer, and expecting to be paid for them, is what's keeping the prices down for everyone else.
Personally, I think the game dealers should be a lot more strict about what they accept and what they turn away, and any substandard carcass should be the stalker's problem to deal with.

thats spot on!

Far too much crap going in, by apparently experienced stalkers demanding top dollar!

I visited a place though work experience that had/used a communal chilled larder, Its one of those things that do need to be kept clean and tidy and the people using it have to be very responsible as well.
The floors were scrubbed well after the deer being drug and hung, With quite a generous tray to left the blood drain I honestly wouldn't trust most people to keep It that clean, I wouldn't even trust myself to keep a larder that clean.

The only "Blood/Meat" allowed on the floor was roe buck heads next to the legs In a bucket, but those were 10ft+ away from the carcasses and never left for more than a few days.
