Community/Public Larder Near Dundee

Hi All,

Just putting it out there at the moment.....But would there be any interest in having a Community/Public larder in the Invergowrie area, just on the outskirts of Dundee.

I only know of a couple of stalkers, and not how many people are stalking in general from the local area e.g Dundee/West Angus/East Perthshire that would be interested so asking on here first.

This is not not airy fairy idea but a potentially project with possible input from the James Hutton Institute.

Nothing would be set in stone at the moment on how it would be run, this is more of a show of hands just now.

Thanks

So, you get said public larder and indeed with a defined mechanism for use and meaningful upkeep but no Game Dealer is interested in collecting the beasts so stored.

Discuss.
As in public larder for folk to put carcasses for collection / sale to a dealer ....
Stored?....would need freezer facilities?

Or

Public larder for above AND for folk to hang a carcass for few days then butcher onsite themselves for home use ?

There’s a very large Game Dealer located in Dundee who collects all over Scotland.

You cannot drop carcases in to their premises

Not sure yet, but could be similar to East Loch Lomond Larder or GlenKirlie.
No numbers for running costs etc have been done yet as still at the Touchy Feely/Is anyone interested/Is there a need for a larder/Are there enough stalkers in the area to use it stage.

Sadly we don't have such in my part of the UK so you are very fortunate.

As an aside, how do you envisage such a larder being 'policed' in terms of use and food safety?

I’d be particularly interested in a facility where I can hang a deer for a couple days then come back and process it to take home. I’d pay a fee per carcass to be able to do that. Equally, I’d be interested in a larder I can take deer to for pick up by highland game or whatever. Their app would be a useful tool to manage them through the facility.

This is a good read for pros and cons as well as a few good comments, you included K, and have taken a some onboard.

I am already part of an FLS cull team and when it comes to cleaning the larder there is one gun I drive for on the night shift cleans and scrubs the larder till you can eat your dinner off the floor....and if you are reading this you know who you are ;) :D

The FLS larders are inspected regularly and on the whole are kept pretty clean after each team has been through and would like to think anyone using a larder would have enough up-top to look after the kit. Saying that I am only 10 mins away from Invergowrie and if it fell to me to look after the larder the big stick would come out if not kept up to scratch.

I hope it works out for you.

Down here I fear it will never happen. I say this as someone who has repeatedly attempted to arrive at an arrangement with my local and well-known estate in the use of their park deer processing larder with zero success. On each occasion, over at least the last 20-years, negotiations have been halted in accordance with the preffred approach of the incumbent Estates Management Agent (Savills on my last attempt) who clearly either couldn't be a;- bothered to engage with the associated 'risks' or b;- could see zero profit for their Client. No matter the case I made for Community engagement etc. would change their approach and sadly with no clarity in if they actually consulted with the Sackvilles.

If your face/truck doesn't fit Richard nothing will change that.

The chill idea should work and there is money available for good ideas. If your part of FLS team why not encourage Anton and co to open up the chills to local people who have the correct Training and Cert,s. I would of coarse expect to be paid for culling deer if i was culling more than i normally cull.

@rab19 How are you going to stop the tags being moved from deer to deer? To me an unmanned facility is a recipe for endless arguments. If there was an option to print out a unique adhesive label as you brought a carcass in, that might work. The larder would need to be registered with the council and someone would need to take responsibility for the carcasses and manage the facility.
