Bullets are supposed to make up for inopportune placement, immediate fragmentation/expansion and large temporary cavities (which some may wish to call 'shock') helps. All lacking with copper.

Many a deer that have been shot with a lead bullet in the head have died miserably because the bullet didn’t make up for the poor choice of placement!

I think the thread (and many others) shows that both Barnes and Yew Tree work just as well as lead if you stick the bullet in the right place. I certainly would not say the same about all copper bullets as experience has shown that some are just too hard and don’t work well.

The argument going on here is which is best, Barnes or Yew Tree, an argument we had about different brands of lead bullet ever since the site started. Nice to see the debate moved to that level.

forgetting the non-tox thing i actually prefer the 100 grain 6.5 mm over a lead bullet . Having shot the smallest deer close up and the largest deer a long way out with the same bullet . Honestly think the " copper haters" have just been unfortunate in picking up" under tested" newly developed stuff rushed onto the market .
Barnes had lots of tweaks to iron out when they started making these things but it was a long while ago like high pressures, failure to expand , too much copper fouling .
I cant see the point in testing other none toxic bullets , unless i run out of Barnes and cant get more . I have a box of the Nielson sonic with just one bullet gone that i used to set up the Dummy round to set the seating die with ( never made a live round with one , let alone shot a single deer with one )

I dont fix what isnt broken. If it comes down to shortage of supply issues , it will be getting our hands on copper as a metal in the uk as most of the mines are Chinese owned now and its mined in Africa much of it in Zambia. If things like a supply issue on this metal Civilian bullet manufacturing will be way the back of the queue.
Besides i like how the Barnes work 100% weight retention and full expansion id a goal we have strived for a very long time in shooting larger game like deer . Would be more interested in a good none toxic varmint bullet because the Barnes Zinc filled one was absolute utter useless garbage ! They got it bang on with the large game TTSX though

If you can find a manufacturer in the U.K. that can replicate a Barnes TTSX with the same consistency of performance I’ll buy it.

another twenty years into the future at least ! But then how many none military lead bullets do we produce here in the UK ? Soon as copper bullets become the world normal , we will be priced out of UK manufacture just as we have been with other UK lead jacketed bullets

I’ve been using the ttsx since they came out, never had a problem with them.

Since towards the end of the first lockdown myself . Shot smallest to the largest deer in the UK in good enough numbers with better terminals than any lead bullet

And nor have i since you first put me onto them and to be honest nor the LRX 127gr ( both from the 6.5x55 ) Saturday evening Sunday morning shot CWD Roe and Fallow yet to have a problem and I don't aim/shoot any different to Lead

It certainly is Lee hand on heart never had a issue and whilst i can buy 120gr or 127gr LRX i won't use anything else

I've got a video on my phone of a 40y blood trail from a 28kg (larder weight) fallow doe. Broadside shot after she paused from running 150y after I shot one before her.
145gr Yew Tree bullet from my 30-06.
Plenty of blood to follow.
Use copper now, no difference compared to lead apart from impact/strike sound..

It sounds a bit more like a gut shot....
I think it's possible due to the fact the tip has quite a large hollow point..I don't know but they are doing the job so far...

A friend of ours who writes for a well known shooting magazine, once told me that you are an authority on deer once you have shot over a 1000 and an expert once you have passed 5000, some on here will have passed that mark a long time ago..

It's all opinion. In the red deer culls here guys were shooting mayby 500 a year in the hey day on a fresh block so they would have to do that consistantly for ten years. That's in the biggest red deer cull there has been. I've not met any long timers like that who preach themselves up. They answer questions if asked, never blow thier own horn. The guys that do I've always found are at least half full of $iht.
