Corrosion in rifle barrel?

errosion or a poor bore ! Its yours now , if it shoots forget it or it will mess with your head ! BTW i just cut my 243 barrel along its length and the first 5" had no rifling at all , it was still under moa at 200 yards . was sort of wondering why it did not spin the cleaning rod for a while LOL

Yes, condensation and corrosion come together. Probably a chilled and damp barrel placed too soon into a closed gun safe or closet. The rust i.e. ferron/iron oxid will leave barrel after a few shots. Carbon is both good and bad. It protects but also harms barrel or rather affect precision due to build up pressure factor. I say, don't remove carbon to soon/often.

Forest Foam is ok but a bit soft. Needs several attempts to work. Good thing is it protects barrel in a way. Must be used up-side down i.e. from action towards barrel tip or else foam may end up in tigger section.
Anyway, if barrel gets a few shots it will be as new but may still be a poor barrel i.e. low quality.

Without seeing the barrel in person, this is purely a guess. But, if you keep getting carbon fouling in that same spot, I'd guess it's just a part of the rifling that is a bit shallow. Not a huge deal, but it does happen (hence air gauging). Rifled barrels are rarely true and straight the entire length, even less so in mass produced barrels. All too often when people say "this barrel requires a lot of cleaning to get the carbon out of it, but it shoots well!" that's exactly the cause IME.

Again, so long as it isn't at the crown, it shouldn't matter one bit.

JMTCW...

Yes I believe a refund was given to him, hearing word through the grapevine the customer (Tim, nice but dim) could of given the barrel back to the supplier at the range as he'd taken it off himself and they spoke face to face however he didn't so he could take it to Neil for whatever reason.
That's a funny way to go about things if the supplier was offering a refund. There's nowt so queer as folk.

how do you clean your rifle?
Do you start from the chamber or the muzzle?

If you clean from the muzzle, it may be from the end of the cleaning rod...
My 308 rifle has fired less than 200 rounds. When cleaning it the other day I noticed some strange marks in the barrel near the muzzle. Any ideas what these marks are? Copper deposits? Carbon deposits? Corrosion? Pitting? The rifle is cleaned religiously and hasn’t been heavily used. Or is this just normal wear and tear?

I start from the chamber.
good...honestly, I don't have a clue, then. Best of luck!

Oh, you might try to lapping the barrel. I've seen videos of spots like that in brand new barrels (I've not personally seen it in a new barrel) and know guys that have lapped some rough looking used barrels, so I know that lapping works.

I've used patches and Flitz in old military barrels and it worked well...fyi
