Cross on cross

Finally feel time is right for another pup. Going to view a litter of springadors. We'd assumed it was lab x spring but turns out both mum & dad are springadors themselves - any potential issues with that? Basing my knowledge on sheep, I don't like to put cross on cross as get some freaky variations.

Cross breeds tend to have lots of hybrid vigour and are long lasting. I have a 10 1/2 BMH/ Lab. Her father a 50/50 BMH/Lab died aged 18. Her mother - a “mostly” lab died aged 16.

Yeah I've no concerns with F1 cross, every dog I've had (apart from one pure JRT) has been a cross breed of some sort. But usually one single breed over another. In theory these puppies are still only two breeds, wasn't sure if hybrid vigour be weakened by being a F2 cross.

Do you know the dogs? If they work to a high standard then theres a possibility that the pups might be half decent.

F2 is the most problematic cross as faults not expressed in the F1 will come to the fore in this cross. You will still get all the benefits of hybrid vigour and sound crosses are the solid base for your F3's and beyond.

No don't know them. They're not workers in traditional sense, the dad is a drug sniffing dog. First & foremost two main roles will be family pet & my workday companion. Though I do like the idea of taking him/her out shooting too.

Had springadors first and second mating over the years. Always choose the one that looks most like a lab,my last bitch was identical to a full bred lab, just seemed bit better in thick cover than normal lab. She'd squeeze down rabbit runs to get into brambles, never had a lab do that.
Doubt you'll go far wrong with a pup, best of luck with your choice.

A drug sniffing dog will be very well trained - the requirements for such are probably higher than most gundogs. Might have quite a bit of drive to find things in all sorts of places. Perfect for a flushing or stalking type dog which will be asked to dig out a duck that is hiding under the water under the reeds. May be absolutely bloody useless as a peg dog that sits adoringly alongside your peg wench and loader

I've seen a litter of F1 GWPxLab that were very varied, some looked like pure lab, others pure GWP, then various percentages of the cross inbetween, I've also seen GWPxLab X GWPxLab, most came out very lurcher looking, all good workers though
