Crows on Pig Farm - Question.

Good Morning All,
A mate of mine would has a pig farm has asked me to help clear crows from the pig lots over the week end.

My plan is to decoy the crows from a bail/net hide and shoot the within 40 yards with 6s/5s.

I only have 8 crow decoys but have a lot of pigeon decoys.

Will crows decoy into a mixed Pigeon and crow pattern?

8 crow decoys will be plenty to start you off, then just had shot birds to the pattern what iv found is that the more shot birds you add the better they decoy.
And to answer your question about pigeon decoys i dont think they will put the crows off.

As @Finch says. I was sceptical of these,tried them and looked very foolish! Certainly works, shooting crows/rooks/jackdaws nowadays I put plastic decoys on posts or lofted and rag ones on ground. Swoopers/floaters work too, first few in will get them working.

One tip Chris , be well hidden in that hide, they have wonderful eyesight, and make sure when you shoot them there's none lying on there backs, if there are crows wont come near you, good luck, great bit of sport.

Just 1 thing I'd double check the new GL conditions.
Not 100% certain in eng but do u not need to prove u have tried to scare them or somethng.
Just keep the right side off the law or atleast know wot u meant to have done previously

I knew a couple of welsh guys who had a sheepskin with a red cloth on, it looked like a dead sheep,
they claimed it pulled crows in,
I wasnt too sure if being welsh it had other uses.............

No you have to be satisfied that other methods are not effective.
The tried non lethal methods went out a few years ago. Stupid idea that it was.

I would wear a face veil and gloves plus take a good hide seat. I find it's key to stay hidden until the shot on crow decoying

To the above I would add - space your decoys further apart than you would for pigeons. 4-5m is not too much.

I would add to the above. Put out one or two “sentry” birds. If you watch crows/rooks when there are quite a few there’s usually one or two either looking around near the edge or on a fence post.

Crow have stupidly good eyesight. Unless I am wearing FULL green/camo, infront of a treeline, with camo netting high around me, they literally just fly off as they see me within 50 yards.

The only exception to the above is young crows/corvids in spring, but they soon get wise.

Pigeons on the other hand .....

I think the words in the general licence are “consider”. Ie you need to have carefully considered all viable options before shooting.

in other words you can take into account experiences etc from elsewhere etc. And doesn’t mean you need to have tried them all either.

Spend time making your hide as they will see you a mile off . As other people have said wear a face vail or a camo hat

Put a single dead one on its back wings spread to start and if that's all you have. Plenty will come for the funeral.

I place my decoys in as close as possible like Mr Crow as want to kill them not scare them.
