Hi all
after a discussion with a mate of mine who is also a keen fox shooter i need something clearing up
will fox cubs come to a caller? im not on about what call, just will they respond to any call or will they ignore it not knowing what it is?
cheers
Ian

It depends. If they're old enough to have been on a kill, they may respond to a call replicating the kill. But, they're also curious so I have had success with quiet gentle call which can attract them to investigate.
In my experience a loud call such as distressed hare can spook them.
But, in all things in calling it's pretty well 50/50 luck.

Two nights ago a had caller out on a fence post. Two three quarters grown cubs came out of an overgrown ghyll. Not only did they ignore the various calls I initiated, but 'by passed' the tinned cat food/dog kibble' I had scattered around. They appeared preoccupied with rooting-up grubs or worms. On numerous occasions they walked by the caller and never even looked up at it. Quite bizarre behaviour.
Previous experience has always shown me that cubs have been quite responsive to calls, both electronic and hand/mouth.
Just shows, there are no 'certainties' whete reynard is concerned.
Incidentally, those two cubs 'responded positively' later that evening to the sound of an unmoderated .223 and 'hot lead' !

Called 5 in the other night one after the other without moving. They came in quite confident. Have also called other cubs in this month. Not had many ignore the caller but mainly mature foxes when it has happened.

Have had very little luck with calling in cubs this year - those that have responded I’m gonna say were more inquisitive than actually ‘coming in’. Everything else has been so interested in grubs/worms I’ve stalked into a shooting position.

They will indeed come to a call. They instinctly know what a distressed sound means.
They also know when mother says no! Something we hardly ever hear but I have!

Some will, but most don't have a clue what it is yet and are apprehensive. Sometime a caller will hold them off from eventually getting to you.

sounds like an old woman being strangled!
Well actually the vixen can be very quiet. She will sometimes make a little grunt that warns the cubs something is wrong. We usually don't notice it. She may also give a louder bark and the cubs disappear instantly.
She will also wail if she is far away but is aware of danger.
They are amazing really.

👍that’s my take on it , 3 cubs out last in 1 big field and they wouldnt come to the squeak so shot the furthest out one hoping to get a plug at the other 2 but no sooner had I bloused the first one then the vixen was standing at the edge of the trees barking and they took off for cover .
