David’s JAK (Just a knife)

The second outing was my annual pilgrimage north to Perthshire on the hinds.
I usually go up for hinds in December but this year we had to make it the start of February, due to work commitments ect. One of our usual party couldn't make it this time, so I invited a work contact , who I knew was a keen stalker, and a friend of his. Making four of us in total.
So we packed the truck and set off north, on a drive that doesn't seem to get any quicker the more you do it! We finally made it to the cottage on the estate, with spectacular views over the Loch.
Next day we met the stalkers at the larder before heading out to the target to check zero. With that all done we headed out as two groups of two for the day. It was my turn to shoot second on the first day.
After my companion manged to shoot a hind in the morning and we had stopped for a sandwich. It was my turn to shoot. We had spotted a herd in the distance whilst having a bite to eat. So off we went down into a burn to avoid being spotted, to get the right side of the wind. After what seemed like an eternity, it always does, we emerged where we needed to be. We made our approach on our bellies to a suitable mound of heather just over 100m away front the herd, the bipod was deployed. The stalker explained to me which hinds to shoot and then the 30-06 spoak three times in quick succession. Three hinds down. Feeling pretty chuffed with myself it then dawned on me three hinds means threes lots of grallochung and dragging! Whilst the stalker went back to get the six wheeler, I put JAK to good use.
Being up on hill is an incredible place, the views are incredible, the wildlife and doing it with mates makes it all the better. I would strongly encourage anyone who has never been to Scotland stalking on the hill, do it, you won't regret it. I look forward to the day when I can be up there on the hill and watch my children take their first red.

Thought I'd post to say that JAK is safe and gainfully employed. It's not a time of year when I anticipated getting him too much action- no work for him with the Jackdaw and Magpie I shot this morning, for example.
Anyway, last week, the knife was in Cornwall. Fishing wasn't very productive but I used it on the only thing I caught. Delicious it was, too. Easterly wind restricted activities, but a bit of beachcombing produced some rope and a couple of buoys which I hope to put to good use on lobster pots when I get my boat down there.

JAK,where are you atm old friend?
Still with me, John. I messaged kimh yesterday and offered to send JAK on his way. Summer's not a time of year I shoot much that's edible and I haven't killed 3 of anything with him yet. Will try for a few fish this weekend unless anyone's desperate to put JAK to better use.

That`s all good mate, three sardines is all we need or conversely three white pointers if you happen to nail any,in fact one of them would do ha ha

After that update from the hide, I thought I'd say that it turned into my biggest day ever- 67 Woodpigeons and a crow. My daughter and I breasted about 15 off for the farmer with JAK, plus a few for our evening meal. All worth waiting for. I'll have JAK off to his next adventure in the week.

I hate don't hate to be 'that' guy, but this knife is actually UK legal, right? As in not a sprung flick knife? 🤔
No, it's not a sprung flick knife.
Have you not hosted JAK yet?
Thank you for asking the question, and thank you for the answer. I must admit it puts me a little more at ease, too.

It is something that had been on my mind too, looking at that button on the bolster area, that must be a lock, then?

I was also confident that if it had been, it would have been flagged up well before now.

It's a long time since I hosted JAK, but if I remember correctly there's a very basic locking mechanism on the blade.
Maybe not legal for EDC in the UK (due to the lock) but perfectly fine for being out and about in the woods and fields.
JAK is just a small, "cheap and cheerful" type pocket knife with plastic scales such as I can buy in my local farmer' supplies for a few quid.
His only value lies in the sentimentality and the story that has accrued.

A few bunnies were kicking around "the old house" on property about a K from home and this arvo I thought to go down and pop a rabbit or two. Over the years I have shot many 1000`s of rabbits and today was the first time for a long time that I had tooled up for a crack at them as I leave them for others to pop. I had three shots for three busted heads with the old Krico .22 LR. Its got a roo toe for a trigger a cheap as all **** scope but is as accurate as any other. A mate shot several 1000 rabbits with that old Krico poking it out of the passenger window as I drove around the paddocks at night, its had its share of the humble rabbit but is now generally used for trapped dogs.
I had of course taken a knife with me to open the rabbits up and leg them,it's in the photo and it may look like "just a knife' with its fake stag antler handle.....well it's not such a thing at all.
It was a gift from a mate a month ago along with other items. I had made the trip down to Melbourne to see him as he is suffering from terminal myeloid leukemia and we fear that he isnt going to beat it. We of course do hope for the best and wish him well and my 'just a knife' has been used today and will continue to be used and add to his mateship of 46 years and help keep it bright in my memory every time it goes in my sky rocket. I will send him the photo to brighten him up a smidge.
Apologies for the pic,I had obviously clouded part of the lens with the cool con`s here but you will get the drift. It isnt about the knife quality or the rabbits, it's about good mates and memories that are hard to replicate.
The open eye will see the countless sambar bristles on the chopping block, that old block and axe have seen many deer chopped up for dog tucker on it and the heads and feet of the rabbits will be chopped on it too. I will split the aitch with the knife
The knife was fairly blunt when I opened the rabbits up but did I care? No,not one bit as it was David`s knife.

Put your name on the list if you haven't already and when sent to you feel the power emanating from the parcel as you open it. JAK has been held and used by LOTG.......legends of the game. Remember the case in Pulp Fiction?
Ask no questions, told no lies.
Yes,why was there a need for the question at all. If there was anything untoward and JAK was seized by an over zealous stooge we could show the other side of what JAK has done and how he has reinvigorated a substantial amount of men around the world with a purpose.
The Brotherhood of JAK....watch this space.
I envisage JAK encased in an acrylic resin block one day. .
I must admit it puts me a little more at ease, too
Add your name to the list and use your skill`s to perhaps give JAK a polish...feel the power, join the LOTG.

Hence I have re posted the OP to enlighten any that want to come aboard since July 30,2021. The bastard has been to more countries than I have lol.

I like this idea. And then do a tour of natural history museums of the world with some selected tales and pics. And perhaps some bios of the guardians
