De-tick'ing a Roe sack

Loads of the little sods (ticks) about now

So I was wondering what, if anything, folk do to kill off or remove the little hitch-hikers from your roe sacks once the deer is in the chiller, before packing the sack away ready for you next stalk?

Probably a good plan, hadn't thought of it myself. Would putting the sack in a large plastic bag and freezing it work? At least it wouldn't put chemicals into your venison.

David.

Sounds like a good option.

Taxidermy forums seem to vary, suggesting up to a week to kill ticks.
@sikamalc - Any light you could shed on this?

The added benefit of freezing, is that the sack could go straight in the freezer and then once defrosted all the blood etc would just wash out with a hose and can then be cleaned ready to go again.

This season seems to be tick heaven. Loads of the bloody things everywhere.
Freezing any head or cape for a period seems to knock the little blighters on the head. As for a Roe sack, wash it out well with some disinfectant and hang it out to dry, that's what I do.
Be vigilant with Lyme disease. I would not be surprised if there were more recorded cases this year than normal.

Maybe submerge it in water for a day or so? The little blighters should let go and swim to the surface.

I dont want to side track this thread but how long do the little darlings live for i hung a head in a plastic bag for a week and got bitten by a nymph when i handed it over to the guy

Yup, which is what got me thinking about how I can further reduce the risk of getting tagged or having them take up residence in the car or house.
Had to remove another New Forest tick this morning 🤢

That's what I have been doing todate, I just like the idea of maximizing the chances of killing rather than just containing the little sods.
