Deer stalking

Hi everyone,

I'm new to deer stalking and looking to get into the industry, I was wondering how everyone else started out ? Any help and advice would be really appreciated 😊thanks ,
Lauren

the industry I want to pursue
There have been several vacancies advertised on here.

You might find it helpful to us the search feature, find them and take note of the skills, experience and qualifications that employers are asking for.

Then work out how you will get them.

Good luck.

It's possible to make a small living out of deer management but it's very hard to get into and hard work when you get in. But if it's your thing go for it. I would suggest getting another job as well to earn some other money until you get fully into a paying deer job.

Thank you 😊 yeah I will do definitely , exciting stuff.

From what you say it looks like you mean deer management as a profession.

For me it was two years experience as a trainees stalker, one on a private estate and one with the NT followed by the three year National Diploma in Game & Wildlife Management at Sparsholt College. That helped me secure a job as a wildlife ranger with the FC and, to this day many rangers in FE hold this qualification. The courses have changed a bit but: Game and Wildlife Management courses | Sparsholt College

If you are more interested in Highland deer management then of more relevance would be: HND Wildlife and Conservation Management

You can't be over qualified these days but obviously practical experience counts for more than anything.

Thank you for the advice it's highly appreciated, being a wildlife ranger for FE would be a perfect job for me, its going to take time but it will all be worth it. I'm trying to look around and gain as much practical experience as I can as well.

Im excited to get started within this industry.

Thanks,

Lauren

What is you back ground as a field sport/shooting/farming life style will have the roots all ready planted.

I have no shooting background, I've helped on farms but I've always had the strong interest for culling/deer management. Ive always worked outside within woodlands or farmland, so I'm looking to gain as much practical experience as I can whilst doing the courses needed etc.

Hopefully I can gain some experience locally and get stuck in 😊 I'm eager to be trained and get the right qualifications needed.

Suggest, do your DMQ I - we've sponsored starters through this forum before, maybe worth looking into.
If it is a job in the 'industry' and culling / management side you are interested in rather than pastime interest, look into helping out on culls on some of the Highland estates or RSPB, National Trust etc to get a foot in the door. A stint volunteering or internship doing what you are professionally interested in always looks great and stands out on a job application. Look at FE Wildlife Ranger roles. Get help and experience with the form filling, application and interview process. Competition is fierce.

Best of luck.

Thank you ,I appreciate the advice, I am wanting to get my foot in the door definitely and actively reaching out to see if I can go along to a cull and just gain as much experience as I can , I am wanting to do my DSC1 definitely very soon. I am looking for volunteering opportunity as well.
Thanks again ,
