Deer tray/box for SUVs

The base heck pack comes without a light board/number plate holder.
I see many hunters here where it is left on the vehicle permanently as it is less than the 1 metre overhang that is allowed like that for bike racks.

Ok, so if we were looking at a ground up design.
For me.
Folding, nice to have, but not necessarily needed.
Fit some sort of a box. As my earlier post. It has a cover and keeps the crap out. I am happy to use straps to hold it in place, maybe some bits welded so you could push the straps through easily.
And lastly, possibly an extra separate thing you could buy. A hoist, so you can pick up a 50 kg fallow and lower it into the box.

Hey, this is my wish list.

Heck pack do this.

They do an add on where two handles and a wheel turn it into a wheelbarrow of sorts.

We did consider incorporating a wheelbarrow type option in the design I'm working on, but in the end decided against it. It looked a great idea on paper, but in reality I think it's one of those things that would end up being a bit of a faff to fit and use.
I'm working on the premise that the main reason people want a towhitch mounted carrier is to avoid the need to carry carcasses in the family car, rather than as an aid to extraction. So simple, easy to use design and a very secure attachment are my main considerations.

Still open to thoughts and suggestions though.

I just put it on to save you from reinventing the wheel.
I agree about the faff, I have never seen one other than that ad online I would guess most here cannot be bothered, as a wheelbarrow is usually at home anyway to unload into, a one wheeled wheelbarrow dragging along in a field would have me swearing.

As a recent heck pack convert these are my observations.

If the straps connect more easily (ie not messing about round the back with them detaching / falling off when you move to the front etc) that would be great. So perhaps some eyes rather than just using the mesh. Really a very minor faff but there.

I like to be able to take the bath off and use for other things, I think making the kit fit an off the shelf bath nicely is a good selling point. Can easily be replaced then as well, even if VSS ltd stops making them. Not everyone wants to fork out for a bespoke tray, although I’m sure some will.

Some way of attaching a light board that doesn’t use wires is handy. Often I load my heck pack with two builder bags of rubbish etc, can’t then see the lights easily. Think perhaps a magnetic light board and I’m sure you can get wireless tech for them.

Getting deer back to the "car" a lot use a sled, a frame to fit the sled in so it stays "outside the car" would only need to be in 25x25x3 box section so the tray sits in it. PB's are to floppy. Finn bear would be the best to knock one up as he know fab work inside out.

I’m just going to fix carabiners to the my straps

Solved my own problem!

Aiming to do away with straps altogether.

Yes, that's my thoughts too.
The design is specifically for use with the popular plasterer's baths, but won't prevent the bath being used at other times for other things.

I don't think the width of the bath will obscure the vehicle's lights, but probably will hide the numberplate. So spring clips to hold a numberplate would be an easy fix.

the n plate will need lights, think real world Tim as you are from a world/place where bailing twine is a standard fix for every thing.

Keep it simple and as low cost as practical but not at the expense of quality.
A specific tray that locks in will add cost and limit your customers as people who have trays or plasters baths won't want to shell out on something they don't need.
Numberplate holders are a couple of quid so offer them as additional accessories or purchasers can sort their own.

Just some thoughts, good luck.

It’s more that the ability to use it with things other than the plasterers bath brings much more flexibility. So I sometimes load it up with all sorts (like 6ft high of builders bags full of hedge clippings etc) which then does obscure lights and number plate. A magnetic wireless light board that could just go on the metal frame would be really good and easy to fit when loaded up.

I don’t need a light board with just the plasterers bath on, but if someone drove into the back of me, I’d be happier if I had displayed lights at the back despite the fact I’m fully legal as it is.

It's intended to be a simple add-on to the company's exiting rack, so whatever that rack can currently be used for will still be doable.
It's not as big as the heck-pak, but in my opinion it's much sturdier.

I see - I thought you were building from scratch.
Best of luck with it

A number plate light too to make it all legal.

After a post from @Heym SR20 , I bough5 a pair of CONNIX ones and they are fantastic!

I added some magnetic plate to the rear of my aluminium tailgate on my Ifor P6 trailer with a small hole into which I clip a 6” length of steel lanyard attached at the other end to the light unit. Haven’t lost one yet!

I have just been perusing the web after getting another fallow last weekend. Anyhow, I came across this which seems to cover a lot of what I think I would like.
For me it is all about picking the fallow up and put it, either into my box, which I can strap to the plate, or wrap the deer in a tarp and strap direct to the tray. It is not an issue when there are 2 people but, when on my own, I need way of getting bigger deer home.
I have been looking at putting some sort of a winch on my heck basket and having a ramp to winch it up. As I have said previously, I am not built like a brick sh1t house so need to figure out a decent solution.
