Define "Stalking Rifle"

Pure lead which is usually used in M/L rifles will expand but that is not by design like a jacketed soft point. Soft lead expands when it hits something as it's soft.
Seem to remember there being a slight difference on ammunition definitions between Scotland and England which came to light during one of the many amax debates. Wonder if lead projectiles (even though not designed to be expanding) might be legal for use on deer?

found it, Scotland one must use projectiles which are designed to be predictably expanding (pretty sure solid lead not ok?)
england and Wales toust use hollow point or soft point (not sure if solid lead would be ok for this?).

as an aside, I seem to remember reading somewhere about sabots for use in ml rifles for firing jacketed bullets, this would prob be a way around it?

Here is a proper stalking rifle. Makes a nice .54 hole and most deer just fall over.

SS

That is a real beauty.
As nice as she is, she would not be practical for our hunting as we are more wet than dry on some days washing the rifle in the river after the outing in the bogs.
...and then how does she perform at say 300m?

Just like they used to do with muzzle loaders and long bows on the same ground.
But here is a real trajectory posted by a black powder hunter about his Hawken.

Not an issue, you "STALK" to within range!

SS

Recon you just play around instead of managing deer numbers.
With that (beautiful) old Betsy you can just not be efficient at least you wouldn't be in our terrain. Try selling those things to a forestry company to kit out their prof. hunters, they'll laugh at you. How many deer do you actually shoot in a year with that rifle?

give over , it's not UKV!!!!

you do have to be careful , I've had a telling off for talking about ukv on other forums (apparently I have a stalker!) :cuckoo:

don't worry about it , it seems to be going through a 'phase' at the moment ! I just hope it grows up before a very good site is ruined by a few mods with a god complex ?

are you sure its just a complex.:scared:sad to say that there are a few sites that have been ruined never to return to what they where like in the past, and in some cases its not just the moderators its the fact that money got involved.

been there done that and have the scars to prove it,

anyway.

the rifle does not do the stalking.............its you that stalks the beast the rifle and ammo is what kills it.

simples.

bob.

The current "Stalking Rifles" (rifles used when stalking) in my house. Between the two they are capable of taking any game animal.
