Dilemma - should I call it a day and pack up

The big problem is, the herd species are out of control, and I truthfully think syndicates will solve the problem!
A lot of syndicated leases have been told they aren’t renewing this year in Argyll by the various commissions.
Deer numbers are out of control and members living 8-10 hours away and shooting 3 deer a year are no longer being tolerated.

Syndicates may be the answer ,but not with members living a right trek away.

Always thought this , local stalkers need to sort local problems.
Time and travel is a massive factor.

A syndicate I know of , were asked to shoot 500 deer one year to get numbers down, the next year they could go back to 300.
This is all recreational but serious stalkers.
But this is all done on weekends and holidays etc.

They now have to shoot 500 minimum this year again as it did nothing to reduce numbers.

There are folk leaving that syndicate because they want to Just stalk the odd deer and not cull so to speak.

So you aren’t alone , you are maybe In the wrong syndicate.

Purely out of interest what species fallow I’m guessing

I’m in a syndicate 3.5 hrs away from me, we get our cull numbers every year

How - everyone turns up every time and puts the time in to ensure it is successful and more if required
It’s all about having the right people on the ground who are pulling on the same chain

Lets all agree there is many types of stalkers.
Me I AM a old fart just starting out at 67 yrs old now.
But we all need to help bring down the number's
all of us disagreeing will only help the antis and mr C P

It’s absurd.
There’s keen local shooters who can’t get a look in because someone who lives 500 miles away has more money than them and visits twice a year.
Usually in the rut.
As I’ve said previously one of the issues, though through many reasons, is a lack of opportunity.

There is plenty, I know a stalker who just recently was offered another 350 acres, and that’s because he’s got good reputation for getting the job done.

Every acre I have had in the past I have gained through recommendation and reputation, to the point now where I’ve given 2000 acres away which with my job is too far to be effective at 45 minutes away, leaving me just with 500 the other side of the gate.

I will not have it that there are no opportunities out there. You’re just not looking hard enough.

^ 👍

I would also encourage the OP not to give up on the paid stalks if poss. Great learning opportunities and having started to do it on your own there will be more questions to ask/things to learn
I agree if he's still quite new the DSC won't teach him much paid stalking (but with the right person)would be the right way forward.I nearly gave up once and glad I didn't.I think in a syndicate others might be expecting too much from a relative novice.

This is the problem with deer stalking today. There are a few who are knocking over good numbers of deer and too many who shoot a very few every year. If you are offered a syndicate place where you are expected to shoot a certain number of deer a year your wasting your time and money if you can't for whatever reason fulfill the obligation you have signed up for.
I'll be back in the UK for a long weekend this week and will try my best to make a small dent in the deer population.
I don't think the OP has the heart for game shooting or deer stalking and that's OK. Plenty of other hobbies and past times out there.

Many of us in the south may travel many miles just to get a stalk and get invited from member's on this site 👍 ..
with out you folks we would be waiting forever and like me we keep on knocking doors for a break.
Time after time. but that is shooting

As above if the Op still hankers for the outdoors and ‘contact’ with wildlife. He might also consider joining a sporting rifle club such as the BSRC, that would permit engaging with paper roe, red, fox and boar. All of which only require locking up in a shed at the end of each shoot with no blood & guts to dispose of.

K

I shoot at a club and also have a perm that as some rabbits on it and not much else .
The deer have not crossed the road in over ten years i have put up cameras all over the farm.

But as i say i have a perm and can shoot and practice at deer targets in case they move across the road 🤞 :stag:.
