Discovery 4

Had a D4 for 4 years before I constantly had people trying to nick it - had to sell it.

Before that had a D3 for 7 years.

Apart from an air suspension leg go, never had any drama as I serviced them annually.

Simply amazing machines.

Since my disco snapped its engine I have had a LWB shogun 3.2D and whilst it’s not a quiet or a comfy as the disco (although I dove 1500 miles in it over two days without issue) is a much simpler car and has way less to go wrong with it. It just works.

Now my missus has a shogun, bought off here….and it’s manual. That aside, I have one gripe. The door opens sideways. That is a kin pain in the ass when the trailer is attached. Aside from that it is a stonking machine.

Ah, yes. Poor design and it weighs a ton with the wheel attached to it.
Also getting a dog guard to work with it is hard as the rear seats have stupid wings on them that move, allowing small dogs to squeeze through the gap (one of mine has a taste for seatbelts and has managed to get at them too many times!).
But the lack of electronic everything, despite being an auto, is nice as you know that it is less likely to break!!

To be honest you don’t the low range. 1st gear with the fluid flywheel allows you to crawl at slow speed
Yeah oil overheating is basically the only problem with proper automatic gearboxes (not the automated manuals like DSG). And it only hits you if you crawl for extended periods.

I have a D4..... love it.

Servicing & repairs aren't cheap, but I knew that when I bought it. If I wanted costs on a par with a Citroën c1, I'd have bought.... err..... a Citroën c1.

Car is spacious, comfy, capable, works as a family car just as well as a shoot wagon, can get mid 30s mpg on a steady run.

Is it faultless? No. But the pros outweigh the cons.

Do I regret buying it? 4 years on, absolutely not.

It has had logs, bricks, deer, dogcage, people, guns, wellies, suitcases in the back (not all at the same time 🤔), but just wafted along the motorway yesterday as we crossed the pennines to visit my daughter at uni.

I had D3s and a 2016 D4. First D3 ate its front diff ant just over a year old, traded it in for a new 06 plate D3; had it nearly 10 years, it did everything for off-road days over Salisbury Plain, Tixover quarry, towed caravans and horse boxes regularly. During that time the rear diff did go at about 100K. Bought one of the last D4 HSE Lux. A great car, but got fed up with LR dealers; was lied to over stupid things; never really had any issues with it but sold it at 3 years old when the warranty ran out. Loved them dearly, they aren't the cheapest to run but I don't think there is a more practical car out there. If you can find someone who knows what they are doing with them then fine; if not steer clear.
