I’ve just sat and read this whole thread from start to finish.
Some really interesting comments from members.
I have DSC1 and 2. I have shot a few deer.
Would I learn anything from this new Level 3 course ? Yes, I think I would learn something. It’s a very self absorbed person to say they would learn nothing from it. Hubris has been the downfall of many (read the news at the moment)
However, am I willing to pay £750 to find out ? NO I am not.
Having spent quite a few years involved in training, I find it amusing that the ‘prior learning’ part needs quite a few credits and DSC1/2 actually don’t bring you that many. Nor do years of shooting muntjac - even though you may be able to show cull records of the hundreds you’ve shot.
I would’ve had more sympathy for it had they accepted the prior learning with a bit more kudos, but the simple reason they haven’t is it weakens their position to winkle cash from your wallet.
However, I notice this type of money making all around us. I help out at a local private school doing their minibus training. I’ve held a full class D (coach licence) for over 30 years, been an instructor since 1988, held an ADI from 2012 - 2024 and yes, none of that was taken into account by County Transport Association. That required a two day input from an outside trainer at a cost of £600 to the school, and guess what. The instructor turned up, asked about my previous experience and spent 5 hrs with me before signing me off. He booked another punter for my second day ! Sadly, it’s all about money.
One of the finest places I ever worked at had the motto of ‘Experiencia docet’ which means ‘experience teaches’ that’s sadly no longer the case.
People know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.
