If I remember correctly, Douglas Hurd was neither a judge nor had any legal training whatsoever.
In a democracy, the justice system is supposed to be strictly impartial and in particular, separate from politics. It is a basic travesty of justice if individual sentences reflect public opinion. If it transpires that anybody else has been given a 14 day prison sentence for urinating near a memorial in the past decade, I will be surprised.
The police may feel their function is to pander to the mob, but please let us have at least one institution of state maintain a degree of integrity.
I sit here waiting patiently to see what sentence our little coloured friend who was trying to set fire to the Union Flag on the Cenotaph is going to get. After that, I'm sure the "protesters" in Bristol who get prosecuted for criminal damage will be receiving a suitable punishment...…….

I find the defacing of Sir Winston Churchill’s statue far more offensive than someone taking a p*ss in a public area.

You are right, he didn't. However, as Home Secretary he was advised by those that were.
Additionally, the Judge/Magistrate/Prosecution/Defence in the trial to which this post refers all were.

Must admit I have no idea about london and how noticeable well known the plaque is.
Assuming he is drunk and had no idea that memorial is there ( and judging by the photo it doesn't look massively obvious) I would say it could be slightly harsh getting much more than a warning/slap on wrist or FPN.
Not saying that being drunk and ignorant is an excuse
It will be interesting to see the difference in penalty for those actually caught willfully defacing monuments?
For me doesn't seem a lot of intent from the boy having a pee, unfortunate and stupid as it was, but willfully defacing and vandalising a memorial should be punished far harder, in my opinion
To me it does seem scary the different way the press seem to be pushing 1 side more than the other.
I take it this boy was caught purely due to the photos rather than a polisman being there at the time?
Althou I do think the offence is handled very differently in Scotland compared to England.
When u go to a Scottish music festival there's blokes p*ssiing against every semi screened security fence there is, hell even a lot off birds doing the same.
Polis generally turn a blind eye ( same at big fitba games or gala days) if ur making some extent to be discreet and not p*ssing over someone's property.
At English festivals u just don't get it and seen folk lifted for minor stuff.

Must admit I had a long drive over Fri/sat and had to pee in a couple of places really not happy about, still in lay-bys but busy 1s that usually have toilets.
Always found a wee bit of cover but far from ideal, feel sorry for any women really.
Think just very very unfortunate where he chose to unzip, and too me it doesn't look blatantly obvious wot it is.
I got caught ****ing down a side street years ago in town and the fecking policeman got a bucket of water from the bouncer and made me swill it away much to the delight of every f!?ker in the street laughing there heads off!

When we were teenagers a mate of mine on a night out got caught short and ****ed on the black glass frontage of a building. A very irate copper emerged from the nick, informed him that he might not be able to see in through the glass but the police and everyone else in the waiting room could see out, made some disparaging comments about the size of his genitalia and the mental capacity involved in choosing that spot to urinate, and told him to f**k off. And as my very sizzled mate stumbled off towards us the copper was forced to add “and for f**k sake put it away” as the gentleman in question’s appendage was still swinging in the breeze. I liked being a teenager. We had a lot of fun.

If you have to take a **** outdoors you should be allowed to wherever you are and as long as you cause no damage. To put it simply, for the simple, where else do you go if there is no where to go.?
