good morning ,a little help /advice if possible please,12 year old retired working patterdale terrier <kenneled out side > my dog has developed a persistant cough, started as the odd cough once or twice a day in the warm weather not getting to last longer and much more frequent. dog is happy enough ,eats and drinks as normal has not gained or lost weight or condition ,he is 12 so not as nimble as he was, he has a cancer on his stomach thats not treatable and my concern is the growth may be effecting his breathing. he is booked into the vets next week but they are not overly optermistic on the phone <saying he is 12 and may be time to let him go ,not happy with that as they have not seen him yet !!> thank you for reading .

Sad times that most of us have been through. Personally I don’t allow vets to mess about with my dogs too much once they’re beyond 10. However, if it’s simply kennel cough then your dog should soon be fine. 🤞🏼

Lots of possibilities, kennel cough, heart disease, metastatic lung tumours which with his history is more likely than average. Let them examine him, perhaps get some chest X-rays but if his quality of life is otherwise ok then perhaps he can live with the cough if it can’t be treated.

I’ve seen black terriers from the age of 4 having what you said, never ended good, but if you have a working black terrier and it’s 12 it’s well outlived what it should of lived to.
