Dog food price increases

So, time to order more dog food. Now, admittedly I buy high quality stuf, Millies Wolfheart (Endurance). I just look at order history and reorder. However this time I see that the price of my normal 6x12kg bag order has increased by about £18 since last time about end of February.
Is this increase just the way of things in these times of Brexit, weak GBP etc, or are Millies taking the p***?
The dogs look great, function great etc, but if anyone would care to point me in the direction of a cheaper dry food that works well for them, feel free, please.
I've done the dog food comparison thing previously, time to revisit.....

Hi, I've tried lots of different dry dog foods over the years.
Currently, my working dogs and terrier are on Doctor John Silver (VAT free). I think it's the best one yet. Don't know how it compares to yours price wise though? It's about £12 for a 15kg bag.

Prices have gone up here too, so I don't think you can blame Brexit. I've got my dogs on Taste of the Wild, which was horrendously expensive before, and is now even crazier (£60 a bag at my local pet shop).

I'm looking for something cheaper, but good quality, and that doesn't give my lab/GWP the trots

I thought all dog food was vat free always has been up here. Used Dr John gold & silver & my dogs were good on it. Use chudly working crunch & all my dogs fair well on it I also have a tripe licence & buy tripe too

I use Akela Whole Prey 80% protein 20% veg/plants and zero grains/rice/potato etc. Works really well for my dog and a 10kg bag lasts over a month (he's a 30kg mastiff cross) and costs £42 delivered. This dry food has come up top in Which Magazine and other dog food tests for a couple of years.

I still use Arden Grange and buy from a company called Swell Pets who do two bag deals. I have never really got over them changing to 12KG bags from 15kg. Who are they trying to kid!!!!

so recently I went back to feeding raw. There is a place near me and all they sell is raw dog food. Today I got 10lbs of chicken, 10lbs of beef and 4 lamb necks for £13.00. The dogs are in far better condition than any dry food I have ever used.

CSJ, great range, gluten free, grain free from 12 quid a bag to 40 a bag, thier puppy 27 is very good, used it for my last 4 pups and they've all do e great on it.
I use Tripe, Salmon and Potato or Lamb and Rice from August to end of March then wean them onto That'll do/Hi Lost for the summer.

I feed my two little springers on this (plus a raw pheasant leg or thigh). I buy direct from the maker, they do a carriage free deal of 3no. 10kg bags for £100.

They refer to it as "working dog" food so it has no VAT included. I do not understand why all dog food manufacturers don't call all their products working dog food...

I used to do half Akela with half Pero Organic, but sadly Pero have just stopped doing it.

I use raw chicken and beef with vegetables mixed in, my springer is really happy on this , smaller stools , glossier coat and never seems to be hungry which he did when on dry dog food. I do worm him more regularly though just to be on the safe side.

I use beta active for the 3 labs and a rescue terrier, seem to thrive on it although the b****s eat all the sheep muck they can find, just don't seem to be able to break them of the habit.
Water troughs are another favourite with them, straight in regardless of the weather.

I work in the industry and brexit has certainly had an impact indirectly. We source all our ingredients from the UK, but prices are rising anyway, some due to fear of what brexit may bring, some due to people not wanting to miss out on a good excuse to hike the price up.

£60 for a bag of dog food :cuckoo: That's just ridiculous!

Most pet foods have VAT on them. There's an exemption for foods formulated specifically for working dogs. It started about 20 years ago, if I remember correctly. Before that all dog food had VAT on the price, but farmers etc who were VAT registered could claim it back.
It's a bit of a nonsense really, because now anyone can get VAT free dog food, not just businesses with working dogs.

Wheat has gone from about £100/ t a year ago to £140 ex farm now. About 15% of that is Brexit/ sterling devaluation.
I use Dodson & Horrell's Meaty Green Special, 21% protein 10% oil, which I buy in 15Kgs bags but 750Kgs at a time, at less than £9 a bag, VAT free.

I thought I knew a fair bit about dogs but a keeper friend of mine has given me a tip as he feeds a lot of tripe. He mixes Diatomaceous Earth into his dogs food. It's safe, humans can ingest it as a dietary supplement but apparently it is so fine but abrasive that it shreds worms, larvae and eggs as it passes through. You can also dust it through the dogs coat to kill fleas, eggs and larvae.

I just ordered 5kg at the weekend. Should last a while.

Vary the diet, just in case there is something lacking in a chosen complete food. Raw Mackerel, a sheep rib cage now and again!
I heard that Purina give money to anti fieldsports organizations, so I stopped using any of their stuff.
I think greyhound food is/was VAT free.

You do get what you pay for to a certain extent, if something is about £1 a kilo it has to be cheap ingredients and whilst on the outside a dog looks fine, long term I would question. Most public service dogs get either Royal canin or Arden Grange. Both have various formulations to suit. All my dogs have done well on one of these although I've always given extras as well.

I started my dog on Royal Canin as that's what he had as a pup, but when I looked into alternatives I realised it's fairly low quality food which is sold at a premium price.

Have a look at https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-reviews/0060/royal-canin-medium-adult

They do a full analysis of most brands and the RC stuff is pretty poor quality and hugely over-priced. I've no doubt dogs will do fine on it but there are loads of equivalent and better foods for a lot less money.

Using this site I settled on Ancestral Canine. Analysis shows it's decent quality, plus it's a reasonable price with free delivery.

chudleys working crunch. I have found this to be excellent. i went through the £50 to £60 stuff to find it had more crap than good in it.
And I know my dogs are fit as, and have no hassle being out every day working there legs off.
The most Important thing is what is right for your dog as it is trial and error to get them the food that suits there needs. whats good for one will run out another :???:
