Dog joint supplement??

Any recommendations other than the generic green mussel, fish oil etc for a working labrador? Now 10 after the first few outings this season he’s a little stiff in the back legs. Understandable given what he’s done, but I’m keen to help where I can. Any recommendations?

Thanks.

Mine had a bit of a problem with her nearside front elbow. I give her Nutramax Cosequin DS plus MSM tablets. She hasn't limped for about 18 months (touch wood) .

Tasr,

I have a 13 year old Cocker and he is on Metacam, you will need to go to the vets as I am led to believe its only available on prescription.

Yumove has certainly seen one of our working collies regain a step or two, nowhere near as stiff when getting up from resting.

Our old spaniel had half of a 500mg paracetamol with her food for the last 4 years of her life and she made 14 years, worked all the time except for the last couple of years
Some vets don't seem to like it but I do wonder if it's because they would rather sell you an expensive equivelant
Our Vet said it was fine. It really worked for her

Metacam isn’t an option unfortunately it messes his stomach up badly!

Thanks all for the quick responses. All as I thought. I’ve used paracetamol before after a long day so will just go with the options. Joint Aid is recommended by a few but at £76 for 2kgs is a serious investment!

Flex a joint, which can be bought via Amazon.
Our Lurcher now 14 and has been on this for 18 months, helps with arthritis.
Friends spaniel has also been on it, which has given it two additional years actively running around the farm.

Or maybe they know how toxic Paracetamol can be to dogs and are thinking of the dogs wellbeing rather than cost, hopefully one of the vets amongst us can give a professional opinion but Paracetamol has always been a big No for home treatment.
My dogs deserve the best for what they give to us, not some cheap painkiller that has contraindications for dogs.

Try cannabis oil (CBD oil). One drop a day apparently works wonders from people I know who’ve used it on themselves and their dogs.

Wonder what my spaniel's eyes would be like after a dose of that

Addressing the question though my 6yo ESS has a left knee problem, joint has callus tissue and for a few years he has more stiffness in the joint and not wanted to get out of the truck on his own after a days work or a good run around. We've given him Loxicom during the last two seasons but this March I started him off on YuMOVE, double dose for six weeks and then normal since. Have to say that there's a noticeable improvement when he gets up from resting, whilst he's running around and afterwards he seems to have less stiffness and soreness. The coming season will tell.

I'm in my mid sixties and have mild arthritis, bad enough in my shoulders to have given up competitive pistol shooting. For a few years I've wondered about taking a supplement with the normal cocktail of glucosamine, omega 3 etc. Having seen the effect of YuMOVE on the dog I took up an offer to try iMove several weeks ago which I also feel is having a positive effect on my joint tenderness and mobility.

Few, if any of the "joint supplements" have hard evidence, including in people, where there is more data with one suggestion being the dose of glucosamine has to be 1500mg per day and the benefit was marginal. That's not to say that the placeno effect isn't working. If an owner believes the product will work and so takes their dog out more, so building muscle, then that will support the joint more and reduce pain. I see thi swith dogs who have been on metacam, improved, so come off metacam and remain pain free until the muscle reduces again
The only effective stuff is the licensed medicines (metacam, carprofen and others) which are like ibuprofen. Stomach irritation is not uncommon, but can be controlled with eg omeprazole.

Ive used joint aid for the last ten years or more, certainly extended the working life of my dogs and the quality with it. I really don't see it as a serious investment if it helps improve my dogs life. Usually available for around £50 if you look and goes a long way, pence per day.

Just one I found.

Hi we have just moved our spaniel from Metacam to a different drug Galaprant or something like that as it better for him long term as I believe Metacam can effect the kidneys and stomach so if on it long term should have blood test regularly, he also has yumove daily.

One of My labs has metacam ONLY after a hard days picking up throughout the season and yumove for working dogs every day Of the year . Got all three on yumove all year round !! Not cheap but better for the dogs and probably cheaper on the long run in vet bills ?... found yumove on web for Just over £50 for 480 tablets . So not too bad

Mine are already on ya move No I was referring to the one Dicki mentioned a substitute for metacam... he said he THOUGHT it was called galaprant ??? But wasn’t sure ?? . Thanks

Our 15 yr old 'Camodog' (avatar), improved markedly when we began giving him 'YouMove'. This was after he developed stiffness in his joints at around13 yrs.
