Dog pain killers

Might sound like a silly question but is there any approved pain killers for dogs for sprains and twists (like humans take paracetamol) that you can buy over the counter?

My vet has just charged me 76 quid for 10 tablets! (included consultation that was unnecessary)

my vet told me to give the dog half a paracetamol twice a day,
they know they will take the lost profits back over the years,

It's getting stupid hear mate, it use to be a good practice who you could talk to now they just money grabbing ****s!

Unfortunately they are the only vets in the town so hold the monopoly

Paracetamol is a pure pain killer and wil do nothing for the inflammation from the injury. For that you need one of the antiinflammatory drugs and for that you'll need a prescription.
Essentially if you can get it without vet advice it's probably useless!

Omitted to state that Paracetamol was used pm, 30ml of 1.5ng/ml Loxicom given am.

I just don't understand why there is a need to charge extortionate fees for a unnecessary consultation that lasted 4 minutes to part with the most basic of drugs, that they also put a hell of a markup on May I hasten to add, surely you must agree that a animal equivalent or paracetamol or Ibroprofen should be available without the need for daylight robbery!

Sorry about the quality of the photos, copied from ‘The Gundog Veterinary Bible’ and maybe helpful.

Sorry should have said animal equivalent OF...... I am fully aware that this would not be Ibroprofen but say carprofen, loxicom or metacam in low dose that is available over the counter, just like humans buy paracetamol and Ibroprofen over the counter.

So 250 mg twice a day?
This depends on the size of the dog!! If you give 250mg to a 1kg chihuahua you will massively overdose but to a 90kg mastiff it will have no effect. I cannot specifically advise on your dog but I normally aim for 10mg/kg so a 25kg dog gets a 250mg dose three times daily. This is of course assuming that the dog is otherwise healthy and has no underlying diseases. Hope this helps

Thank you that clears that up, obviously if my dog was in serious pain I would be heading straight to the vets however just the slight pull or twist having an option helps, thanks once again and if you fancy setting up a practice by me I'm sure you would get a healthy customer base :)

Ask your vet for a prescription and order metacam .Pain relief and anti inflammatory in one .
Vets should be ashamed at their charges when the drugs come at such low cost to buy especially in bulk .
Im all for making a living but extortion by playing on your emotions should be a crime in the industry .

100 percent agree mate but the clowns in my town will charge you more for the prescription than the drug as they give the bare minimum to make you come back for another consultation!

Go to pets at home mate .Never had bad dealings with them in 10 odd years .
Stick the metacam in the fridge and will last years despite the use by date .
