From my perspective the profession has changed over the last 25 years, in some ways for the best but in a lot of ways for the worse. The majority of practices are now corporate and therefore run as a business rather than there being cross subsidies between different areas of the practice with the principle aim being to keep clients happy. Years ago there were no sales targets to meet but now they are all too common. The better corporates will not push these targets on those in clinical positions and I am fortunate in that respect but I hear that is not always true. One big difference is that in the past the vet you saw would often be the ultimate decision maker who had to justify all fees in person but these days the fees are often set by the management teams who may never actually meet the clients. I guess what I am saying is don’t judge the staff at ground level too harshly, they will probably have no control over pricing! If it is any consolation I buy my own dogs meds at an internet pharmacy as it’s cheaper, even with a staff discount!!
