Dogs eating Cherries

We have quite a nice ornamental cherry tree in the garden, this time of year it’s rammed with fruit. The fruit is bloody bitter so I don’t like them, but the labs do and make a bee line for it and hoover up what they can whenever there out. Could this be detrimental to there health in the long term… Short term they are not sick but have that look like a melted snickers full of whole cherry stones.

No try and stop them , they are potentially dangerous as contain low levels of cyanide and the pips are not good for them either as can get lodged

I believe Cherry stones contain cyanide in a very small amount ok if they don’t crush the stones but could be dangerous if they eat a lot (crushed) !

At the moment every piece of fox **** is jet black & full of cherry pips around this area, same every year so I suppose it doesn’t harm them to much ?

The issue with cyanide is it builds up in the liver (cue being shot down) and poisons the animal. Same problem with apple pips I believe

I looked into Apple pip poisoning a few years ago due to a neighbour dispute in work , think we worked out that a dog would have to eat a ridiculous amount of apples over a period of weeks to have any effect.

Seen an elephant,full of marula fruit that was ripe, charge a Landover we figured he was either drunk or hungover so gave him right of way at high speed!

The stones of a lot, if not all fruit contains cyanide, apples, cherries, nectarines, etc.
Also if you’re of my age, you’ll remember breaking various nuts at Christmas time, especially almond nuts and eating the stone.
Remember the bitter taste some had that made you spit it out instantly as well as almost involuntarily, well that was cyanide!

I recall being told this in Zimbabwe, the monkeys would take a bit or two and then drop them, then the elephant hoovered up!

It's the black and white stripped ones that are full up besides me .
