Dogs must like bullets

I like to get a bit of practice now and then with the rifle and have often noticed how after the shooting is over and I walk down range to check the target with dog, he'll often run on to look at what I've shot.
Obviously nothing apart from a target but it doesn't take long for him to run on and find the actual point of the bullet strike in the backstop.
He'll then start digging and by the time I've gathered the target board up he'll have a decent hole.
I've had a few dogs that seem to been able to do this, I just find it quite fascinating that they can find a fired bullet just from the sent.

my spaniel would always retrieve a shot duck and then run back in to pick up the plastic wad
not sure why he did this
he wants to save the planet from plastic waste. Maybe the dogs will take over the planet once we have managed to exterminate the human race

I sometimes wonder if they follow the trail of expelled burn gunpowder particles to get to the shot site or whether they mark the sound of the impact. My older GWP certainly wants to get to the target when the rifle goes off...

Quite uncanny. Mind you I increasingly have targets days where a dog would be very useful to find the sodding strike - anywhere would do!

I remember Griff's dog Pepsi would streak down to the targets, on Arran shooting in mornings, Griff always used to say to anyone he hadn't seen before, "Pepsi will score your shots"
