Don't buy a Sako Hunter 85

Fair point, as you mention this had everything to do with the import wait for a new one. I paid very close to RRP! From the inspection I gave it when purchasing it, it looked absolutely mint to me but ai am taking him at his word, he was the first person I spoke to afterwards. As mentioned, I’ll be very happy to report if GMK offer to make this right but my bitter experience with a Beretta in the past doesn’t leave me hopeful.
I bet you would be very happy if gmk offer to make it right.... I would be too - but at the end of the day its not their problem, its not a new rifle, its out of warranty and most likely as has been touched on previously rather than an outright fail of the stock I would hazard a guess that someone has simply taken it apart and not understood the recoil effects of a 375 - hands up that I would of been in that corner myself before I read this thread and done some digging

Sometimes used Sako rifles have had their stocks switched. This usually will just affect the accuracy but in a .375 H&H it could lead to a split stock. I have an older Sako Safari from around 1984 with it's original stock with 2 recoil lugs, and that's been fine.

A few years back I saw someone trying out their brand new CZ550 on a range, and the stock cracked after 7 rounds, so it's not uncommon.

A rifle maker told me that the best walnut is French, and that the Turkish walnut is really too soft for the big-game calibres.

Not a big issue fixing that stock. One just needs to take into account the recoil of such an action, the flex within the stock and therefore needing to relieve certain areas to avoid recoil being introduced in a wrong place. This relieving of course does not go down well with rifle specialists who then might find a small gap between action and stock which of course is proof for bad workmanship. Sometimes these specialists just deserve a cracked stock. Sorry but it is true.

PROBLEM SOLVED!
After getting no love from the UK importers (GMK) I contacted Sako in Finland directly who then shipped me out a new stock, at no cost to me, which I swapped out this morning from my local dealer. I think the walnut is prettier on the new stock anyhow. A pity to have to wait as long as I did but I now have a brand new lighter stock should I wish to swap back to the factory stock. In the meantime, I had the action professionally glass-bedded into a GRS HUnter stock by my gunsmith, which is £600 well spent in my mind. I had the rifle down on the range, shooting tight groups happily. Thanks to COVID, I won't even miss my Buffalo hunt as that was postponed by a few months anyhow. So a good result in the end. Thanks to the members who offered solid advice and Sako who came through in the end (despite GMKs best efforts to lighten me of £850 for a new stock).

Sako shipped out a new one for me despite GMK refusing. Says a lot about the manufacturer! I'm happy with the resolution but have opted for to have the action professionally glass-bedded into a GRS hunter stock by my RFD in the meantime.

If it's out of warranty you'll be looking at buying a new stock. Very doubtful they will replace it free of charge.

I think that it also says alot about GMK as well.

Good result, if you do chose the use your new walnut stock make sure there is a gap between the tang on the back of the action and the stock inlet or it will no doubt fail again in the same way.

It also shows how damaging posts on the internet can be !!!!

This had nothing to do with it being a Sako 85, or even a Sako, it's about an importer who didn't feel responsible for a secondhand, out of warranty, 3 year old secondhand rifle !

Sako themselves, had zero obligation, but supplied a new stock, as a "show of good faith". Well done them.

I would consider yourself very lucky, and maybe you'll now sing their praises, rather than telling people not to buy their rifles !

Says even more about GMK!

If you no longer need it and are happy, you should do the decent thing and return the replacement walnut stock to Sako.
I agree. However, I think he's unlikely to do that. This fellow pops up every couple of years (contributing nothing in the interim) in order to use this forum as a mechanism for blackmailing manufacturers. A pretty poor show, I reckon.

Well done, Sako though. Very nicely handled. :thumb:

You will always get people in this life that try and get something for nothing, i found the majority dont have much in the way of consideration to anyone else.

I am all for complaining, but there is a correct way to go about it.

Hats off to you that you had the cheek to ask them to take action, i would have been too embarrassed and the fact that you have the nerve to critice GMK for not doing anything beggars belief! You are clearly the type of customers business dont want, so after all this you go and buy a new stock? Brilliant

I have been on driven Boar shoots that guns have had umpteen shots on Boar and missed, and actually moaned about not shooting anything and asked for refunds. We (or I) actually suggested we tie one up on a tree for them with a target stuck on it on one of the drives.
And when you see them at the airport their dressed up like the great white hunter, all the gear but bloody useless.

Ok - not what my FEO said(for me) but good for you!

always worth verifying EVERYTHING an FEO tells you. The home office guidance that they are supposed to work to is a public document. You can read it and you ask why they aren’t following it in their conditions

I'm not surprised that GMK didn't support an out of warranty claim. That's why a warranty has terms. Although not helpful to you, they've done nothing wrong so it's a bit unfair to slate their products! It was very good of Sako to help you out. They didn't need to either so it says something for their customer service.

I know several people with .375H&H+ on their FAC for deer/AOLQ. It depends on your force to some degree, but also your attitude towards the licensing team and their opinion of you.
