Don't mention mental health.

Out of interest, what did he say? I'm not on twitter

A couple of days ago he said:

I'm in a good place now, but at times in the last few years I have struggled with feeling really down and really anxious.
I never felt I could talk about those things. But some of you spoke openly about depression and anxiety and that really helped me.
Thank you.

I heard at the weekend a young lad I know was wanting to apply for his sgc. got asked by the GP how are you feeling. His answer was, bit unsure what the next 12months will bring being a q's in the building trade as the economy is on the down turn. No mention of depression/ anxiety etc. nothing, no follow up. Same conversation we've all had in the last 12months.
Instant refusal. And a point blank don't bother trying to to appeal. Unbelievable.

What a fekin plum, openly condoning hiding it
I know it reads like that, but I don't think that's what he means. I think, in his 2nd paragraph, he's flagging up the fact that the risk of gun seizure is preventing shooters from being open about mental health issues. Which is indeed madness. And what's more, we all know it's true. I have even seen someone on this forum warning against going to the doctor for that very reason. (For which I awarded him 🏆for the dumbest post of all time).

You can absolutely talk about your mental health.

During my last renewal I was off work for a week with work related stress and I called my FEO up and discussed it with them at the time, explained the situation etc. I had an interview at home, my wife was spoken to as well briefly while I was there, and the report went in. My ticket was renewed with no issues and I’ve had several variations granted since then as well. I’ve since left that employer and work elsewhere now too, almost three years ago now.

I also know of a keeper who is on some sort of anti-stress/anxiety medication and still has their ticket - it’s not a case of “show any signs of weakness and your ticket and guns are gone.”

I don’t know the ins and outs of what was posted here as I’m not on Twitter either but I suspect this might be more a case of he DIDNT approach his FLO about any of this, tweeted about it, tweeted about hiding it, tweeted about condoning hiding it, and that was the issue.

We’ve all seen people on here with historical convictions getting their tickets granted and we ALL say to those people “honesty is key”. Why is mental health any different?

Well done for speaking up and I'm glad you made changes for work to get you in a better place.
I had a ride in that boat about thirteen years ago now and my renewals etc have been fine. Honesty is the best policy no matter how trivial the incidence may be, you telling them is far better than the powers to be having to find out.
In all honesty if I was likely to be a danger to myself or anyone else do to having a mental health episode and I had lost the ability to function in a coherent manner I would rather I was refused or my licences withdrawn.

About 3 years ago, I was diagnosed with advanced osteoarthritis in my knee and was prescribed several painkillers, including amitriptyline. After 6 months, I was not getting any pain so I stopped the medication. 2 weeks later, on Christmas Day, I had a panic attack. It took a couple of days to find out that amitriptyline is an anti-depressant that works as a painkiller at a low dose rate and you should slowly wean yourself off of it. Once I realised what the problem was, I could handle it by thinking about what I would be doing the next day. I never took amitriptyline again and told the surgery that I wouldn't. I found that rubbing in Arnica Gel worked just as well/better.
My F.A.C. and SGC are due for renewal in about 15 months and I shall tell plod about it then, because I don't want the medical report to suggest I have been prescribed an anti-depressant.

I should hope that the medical notes will list the conditions under wich your medication was prescribed. It is surprising how many different tablets can treat a variety of ailments.

Getting out in the fresh air, quietly stalking through a wood or sitting in a highseat is exactly how I unwind and relax. If I couldn't go out stalking my mental health would probably suffer.

Even when my back pain has been quite severe and prevents stalking I've gone out after squirrels as that reduced movement and satisfaction works wonders to make me feel better and aid recovery.

Yet doctors in medical practice are able to stay in post and continue working if they get hooked on drugs and it is a far from uncommon situation .

These are the notifiable 'medical conditions' from Form 201 & 201V on the Home Office website.
If an applicant has sought medical advice or treatment for any of these then he or his GP will know.
I think it follows that unless a particular drug or medication has been prescribed as treatment for one of these then nobody needs to report it.:)

There is a lot of mental health issues out there. Hiding them is dangerous.
As others have said and from my own experience if you contact the FLO, explain the situation are very reasonable people. They will work with you to sort out a resolution.

I was prescribed some of these painkillers. Read the label for what they are usually used for. Talked to a serving to a friendly person in the job who knew my condition. Said to make sure the docs put in my records what they were actually for. In capital letters so it didn't get missed. Didn't agree with me anyway so stopped them. On another note. The gamekeepers Welfare are running a scheme at the moment. We do kind of have our own wee worlds. the buzz comment is CHECK IN WITH A MATE.
Better to have a good chinwag and put the world to rights. J

Best advice ever.

Remember ‘Crocodile Dundee’? in one scene a chap tells Mick Dundee that he’s seeing a shrink.
Dundee replies ‘Jesus - haven’t you got any mates you can talk to ?’
Good friends matter. They REALLY matter.
