DPT vs T8? Anyone compared

Has anyone compared a DPT over barrel to a T8?
I’m currently running a T8 on my 06 - I like the steadiness the weight gives plus the minimal extra length and it’s reasonably quiet as well as range use friendly.
To reduce weight and bulk a little I’m considering a magnum DPT over barrel with 4 stainless baffles. Less diameter, slightly less weight, still range friendly. Thing is I struggle to believe it can be as quiet with only 42.5mm diameter

Anyone compared? I’m reluctant to pay to try. My trial of a CMM4 on a 308 ten years ago was a big mistake - 3 shots and sold - it was deafening

I have both.
Around 10yr + ago I bought a T8 for a 308 and its ok plus still have it.
Around 6mths ago I bought a DPT for a creedmoor and its so much better in lots of respects.
Firstly its around 400g lighter if memory serves me right. That in itself may not sound much but stuck on the end of the barrel it mounts up.
The oal is better as in the set back is similar but there's less out front by 50mm ish.

Noise wise I can't tell so a no brainer really 👍but it depends if your a range person or field shooter.
Field = DPT in my mind.

You will struggle to find something much quieter than the T8.
A compromise is needed to get a good all rounder regarding weight, noise and recoil reduction.
depends whats important to you and your needs.

I have t8 on a 270 and dpt on 6.5-284. 270 might have a grain or two more powder. I cant tell the difference in niose reduction but i much prefer the dpt because it is more compact and very light

I used Reflex on all of my sporting Rifles from when they first came out. 0.22-250 to 300 Win Mag. However, despite the use of WD40, I have had 2 corrode out on me. I now use Wildcat Predator and Evolution. They perform equally as effectively as the Reflex and are way more versatile in that they break down into individual components. One set of tubes can be used with different calibre diffusers and different threaded bridges.

I have used them both on a .270 (the same gun, shooting the same ammo).

T8 is obviously much heavier and more cumbersome. DPT was astonishingly light and portable by comparison.

I couldn’t really notice a difference in noise when actually shooting. Stood behind someone shooting, I thought I could just about tell a difference, with the T8 being possibly a touch quieter - but it was very subjective.

Felt recoil seemed less with the T8, I assume because of the weight. But the DPT still reduced the .270 from noticeably punchy to entirely pleasant (I also shot an unmoderated .270 at the time).

I didn’t have the T8 for long, so can’t comment on durability - clearly there are people who have had them for years and really rate them for this. The DPT may not compete so well here - it erodes reasonably fast internally, and after 4 years of regular stalking use has got noticeably louder.

Overall, for me the DPT is the better mod. It does almost the same job, but is SO much lighter. It may degrade faster, but I’m willing to take that because of the portability.

Got both, used them both on my 308 and 243 (both 30 cal mods). The T8 seems much quieter, but is it noticeable/measurable to the average person - probably not.

The T8 is also heavy, much heavier than the DPT and does not make it fun to carry. DPT is light and barely know it’s there. The DPT isn’t built for large shot counts and gets very hot after a few rounds so I tend to use the T8 on the range, but the only good thing going for it is if you need a follow up, you can use it as a club!

Highly recommend the DPT, you won’t regret it

4 stainless baffles, really? I’d of thought one used as a first baffle would be enough. You’ll be adding a lot of extra weight there. You can add extra standard baffles to a DPT at a fraction of the weight.

Thanks so far everyone.
I have a Hausken JD 184 XTRM which is light and reasonably quiet however on the end of a 23.5” barrel it feels like a bit odd as it’s like an appendage.
I got the T8 very cheaply on the exchange deal. I wanted it for the range and to try to reduce the out front.
I quite like it as I like forward weight. It feels part of the rifle and is as quiet or quieter than the Hausken. It is however a tad much for my annual moose hunt. The Hausken isn’t long for this world so I was considering the DPT mag with all stainless baffles as a compromise. I can’t really go any louder.

Sound reduction is a very subjective thing IMO and depends on so many factors. I had a PES T12 on my 270 and now have a wildcat evolution. The stats say that the PES is better for sound reduction, but not to my ears.

I also have an ASE SL5i on a 243 and think that’s brilliant too, most of the time. Sometimes I think it’s crap. It depends what I’m doing, where and when, maybe my mood and how loud the kids have been that morning. Who knows! Topography and wind direction probably affect my perception of it too.

A friend had an Jet-Z on a 270 WSM and that sounded like an air rifle when I was stood behind him. But when I fired it myself I nearly sh*t myself it was that loud. What I would have said was the best mod in the world one minute, became the worst the very next.

I guess my point is that reported sound reduction is just one thing I would take into account and I also wouldn’t take anyone else’s experiences as gospel. Try and have a go with some yourself before committing if sound reduction is so important to you, or go with what you know and get another T8.
