Driven Boar Calibre

Know a guy in the forest of dean, who shoots loads, 308 150 gr ppu, asked him about different ammo etc, at the ranges he shoots , more than enough,

Most of my German hunting friends use a 308 or 30-06 as their primary boar gun as easy to shoot. They might reach for their 9.3 if very large boar are expected.

A good tough bullet and a rifle that handles and points like a shotgun, that fits well and shoots where you look is far more important than calibre. Some like red dot sights. I prefer a 1-4x20 scope.

In Germany the min legal is 6.5mm cal and 2,000 joules of energy at 100m.

In terms of action type, bolt action is most used along with straight pulls. Both can be reloaded fast, but realistically you have one shot, so make it count. Most of us cannot reload fast enough to get a second accurate shot at a group of piggies run through the woods. If you want an immediate second shot then its a double rifle that is needed.

Thanks for the above guys plenty to go off. Think I'll have a look at a short barrel 30.06 seem to have a little more umph than a 308. Got a few Reds on my ground aswell only shoot 1 per year for the freezer with the 243 but always felt it lacking so should cross over nicely.

Anyone any recommendations on muzzle brakes?

243 doesn’t not create enough blood channel/ damage in wild boar to stop them when there running unless it’s a very lucky shot ?
The wound channel will often clog up if not enough damage is done . You might kill the pig but it will most likely keep running and possibly die a long way from where it was shot . Anything below 7mm is generally not legal in anycase on the continent for driven boar . It’s a long way to go and find out you’re not allowed to hunt due to having the wrong equipment?
Always found 243 lacking on Reds wouldn't like to think I was tackling a boar with it

yeah wear ear plugs under the ear muffs

.30-06 or .300 win mag 👍🏻

Or if you fancy something a bit different a .45-70 Underlever
Have you used it on Boar? Got Clint Eastwood vibes but I can see the appeal it's a big old bullet. Guessing it's range is restricted if you wanted to use it for general deer work.

I wouldn’t go for short barrel. Fundamentally affects the weight and balance which is not good on moving targets. Keep a traditional 22” or 24”. It will handle so much better. And forget a muzzle brake. They are bloody horrible to shoot kicking lots of crap around you. And even worse if you are stood next to someone shooting with one.

And when shooting pigs, you absolutely need your hearing. If its a highseat you will hear them before you see them, ditto on a driven shoot.

Personally I am use a 25” barreled double in 7x65r and don’t wear any hearing protection. The long barrels keep the noise well down, and on most hunts you fire one, perhaps two shots.

Of course I use hearing protection when zeroing or on the range.

Forget what you see in the Prince Albrecht type videos. Driven hunts where you shoot lots of game are really quite rare and bloody expensive. Most driven hunts, you expect one or two shots, but often get none.

No I got mine after I did my last boar trip and I’ve had two kids since then (plus covid in the middle) so not been for a couple of years!

But no I have mine for deer and AOLQ, fully open. I got it granted for close in woodland stalking as it’s a great brush cartridge. 👍🏻

Works great on deer though, very minimal carcass damage.

Yes.

Don't use them around anyone whose friendship you value....

Pinkney engineering on eBay - I got mine for my .300wm off there and it’s the mutts, plus it was only £25 posted.

I shoot at a few clubs where brakes are very popular so personally I’d say crack on with one.

I prefer them to mods to be honest - they cut the recoil the same, stop muzzle flip and you don’t have to have a tin can on the end of your rifle upsetting the balance. JMHO and all that.

The downside being you have to wear ear defenders but there’s lots of good options out there.

Never shot driven boar so I'm just going to say to use whatever cartridge you fancy that is legal, unless you go for a medium or large bore or some super fast mega magnum you aren't going to notice much of a difference.

That said I have shot moving targets and I would very much focus on time training that element, along with recoil control (308 and 30-06 are both low recoil but nonetheless) to get the bolt cycled and get back on target.
Fit is important, as is an optic set to naturally be where it needs to be in relation to your eye. Red dots and holographics make that easier, but of course no magnification without add-ons.

Like Heym, I think longer barrels swing much nicer (26" on mine partly for that reason).
I'd not bother with a brake, but reducing recoil is always beneficial for accuracy or recovery.

I'll have a look thanks.

Suppose I can always take it off if I don't like it

I go boar shooting every year I use blaser success.308 150gr with muzzle break works perfect for me you can’t use a moderator!

Browning Bar in .338 or 300 Win mag is perfect if you can get one. They rattle them out far quicker than any straight pull.

Key with boar is choice of bullet. They are not shot at long range so BCs are not relevant.

Boar are a lot tougher than deer. Skin is a lot thicker and usually a good layer of fat below.

You want a bullet that penetrates and holds together well and will punch through the animal.

Their vital organs are also further forward than on a deer and are well protected by the forelegs, shoulders etc.

You also want a bullet that does lots of damage on the way through.

In the olds days a partition bullet like the RWS H Mantle was perfect.

Now in the non lead era, the Fox or the Peregrine VRG3 would be perfect. The later is a round nose and hits like Thor’s hammer.
