Driving Licence renewal after 70

I'm having my medical to retain the 7.5t and trailers next week, for the third time. £80 this time! £50 last time. I shall ask what their policy is on gun licenses, while I'm there. I asked for an appointment in November, but was told to try a month later.

Hmm. 70 to renew your licence I guess is perhaps about right. But, like others, I didn't know about the trailer bit. I shall have to check if they fiddle with your motorbike entitlement too. In a few years time, that is.
DVLA seem to have quite a record of removing previously held entitlements whenever or for whatever reason you send back your license to them for amendment. We had quite a problem with them some years back when they were removing minibus entitlement.

So I believe. I also recall an article about motorcycle entitlements going AWOL. Not good if you only discover you've lost an entitlement when you get stopped by the police!

Ive herd the bike one a few times. It pays to keep copies of everything when dealing with any government body!

The whole driving license system is a mess. I've just renewed mine it being 8 years out of date but gone unnoticed by many, including car and truck hire companies who contact Swansea when you hire a vehicle.

In the past there was also confusion over my entitlement to drive class 1 HGV. Our driving examiner insisted that it wasn't shown on my license. The HGV driving examiner in our local test centre couldn't read it either, so I popped into the local police station and the desk Sergeant who I knew didn't know when he read it so he phoned Swansea and got them to explain it to him. He came back saying they tell me yes it is on there but I still don't understand where. Adding that some of their traffic boys think that they understand the license but in reality they don't so they always contact Swansea.

An elderly friend of mine gave up shooting (clays) some years ago as he once fell over on the stand, it frightened him so much at the thought of the gun discharging and hitting a bystander. He still drives and he has just turned 90? If you are over 60 for example and still need to retain your HGV or PSV a medical report will retain that entitlement although I understand the CPC must be up to date. For towing a caravan/trailer a medical must be taken to keep that entitlement.

BC.
I was under the impression that it is only necessary to have a medical to retain the right to drive a 7.5 tonner when over 70, not to tow a 3.5 tonne trailer with overrun brakes.

🤯

🤦‍♂️
Driving gloves! 🤣🤣🤣

Always beware of anyone wearing driving gloves or a flat cap in the car. So the saying goes if they have a hat they are a tw@

Small and square car’s are also always a hazard. Expect the unexpected, often driven by old people or new drivers, both groups make erratic or last second manoeuvres. Remember: Small and square beware.

Thank me later for these little gems of advice 😁

A police driving instructor once said something similar to me but he specifically mentioned drivers wearing a trilby. :)

this is quite relevant to me as my father (82 this month) in my opinion should not be driving(i won't travel in a vehicle with him or allow my daughter to) , he has already had a cyclist off his bike then left the scene plus a few minor scrapes. the signs are all there.....

its a really tough one because if i report him our already terrible relationship will likely be done forever and he has a god complex so cannot see any wrong in anything he does ever !

any rules they bring in like annual tests after 70 etc can only be a good thing in my opinion because currently the system relys on friends/relatives reporting them or a random stop check or worse still a post accident check.

We have loads of senior citizens here in the Scottish Borders who are in their 80's or 90's and insist on driving to church every Sunday at 20mph on a national speed limit road ( 60mph ). The quicker they are off the road, the better.

Report him - next time he could kill someone!
Simples.

My best mates dad, in his early 70's, had a string of accidents despite riding bikes and driving cars all his life.
The below was nearly the full stop at the end of the sentence, a proper air ambulance job and no-one else to blame.

With agreement, when requested by the police on his hospital bed some weeks later, his licence was surrended.

Was the bike/car accident his fault?
Ken.

I have medicals to retain the 7.5T entitlement, not sure what the procedure is if you just want to drive small vehicles. It's probably on the application form.

Most definitely!
The silver car was parked off the highway and he'd failed to take the left hand bend before it.

The approach, my lads foot points to the tyre scrub line of the bike.

The bust windscreen on the previous picture was bodily contact, but the screen pillar did most of the damage and fired him off to one side.
The tank had a proper knacker dent in it, which got him some right ribbing 😂
