dsc1

can anyone tell me the best way to practise and gain the skills to do my dsc1 ?
Get hold of the BDS manual, learn the contents, practise the shooting positions both by dry & live firing as much as possible to obtain comfortable & steady shooting positions. The BDS Deer identification DVD is also useful.atb Tim

You find the Jelen Deer Services Interactive Learning Centre a very useful tool. I think they give you access if you book your DSCL1 through them - they run courses monthly down the A34 from you.

Purchase the question disc from BDS or another reputable source and study.

The shooting test

3 shots at zero target at 100 yds

3 shots at deer target (used to be a roebuck but now its a deer) - have to be in the 4 inch K zone

3 shots kneeling at 70 yds same deer target

3 shots seated at 40 yds same target

all shots have to be within the 4 inch circle.

Practice with YOUR kit is the only way to pass the test.

You wont be "coached" on the test - if you are the people running it arnt doing YOU or their credibility any favours.

You also need to be safety concious, muzzle awareness and unloading rifle when crossing obstacles etc for the safety test....

May I suggest you join a rifle club. Most good ones can give coaching in shooting to improve your levels of comfort and confidence. The rest you can do from discs as already mentioned and some field craft practice in the field of course.

Even shooting an air rifle will improve your shooting skills.

redmist, how do the people WITHOUT thier own kit ever manage to pass the test i wonder???? maybe correct details of the shooting test may help them as well !
get hold of basc or the bds who im sure will give you all the help you need

shootings the least of it , nip down when you get time chris we can soon sort that , for the rest of the stuff contact BDS . As for kit , you dont need much , we can soon sort that when your ready

One of the things that has always made me suspect of these "qualifications" is that an almost total novice with little to no experience of shooting can with a little bit of coaching pass the shooting test and then be qualified. Sorry but no matter how it's dressed up it just does not sit right.

who said hes a novice ? the test is the same for everyone and all it means is the candidate has a certain level of experience . I reckon a complete novice off the street could pass it within 6 weeks , so what . The thing is some people seem to think level 1 & 2 make them an instant expert , its how you go about things that count .
