DSC2 Questions

Sorry i was going to write more then the door went and i lost track. As an Assessor i feel that now we are down to one stalk we should be ready. Regards the section on head shots it is frowned up for a reason and i have witnessed some worrying shots in my time i would personally advise against head or high neck shooting.
Does your personal aversion to head / neck shooting mean that you would judge them differently when you are assessing?

Just remember that the whole thing is far from being rocket science. The questions are not that difficult to answer IF you know what you are doing and the practical aspect should be a doddle.

A lot of the questioning is theoretical. The chances of a runner on your assessment is hopefully pretty low so you get questioned on what you would have done if ‘x’ happened, you will know it. My struggle was taking it back far enough and spoon feeding the answers because in my mind the fact I’m lining a shot up means I have assessed a safe backstop etc so I never remember to say I’ve checked.

The way I looked at it - if you can put your hand on a dead deer and justify how it’s got that way you should be fine. Head, neck, chest, gut - whatever as long as you have done it right then there’s no reason to not pass the shooting element.

My assessor was spot on, as well as my witness which made the whole thing a lot easier because I felt like they were invested and not looking to trip me up. I do however think that they can act accordingly. If you shoot 100 deer a year they are checking you are doing it right. If you have been stalking 3 years and have shot a total of 6 deer half with a guide, then they are going to be assessing more closely.

I’m finding the whole portal thing very confusing. I’ve done my narrative and sent it to my assessor 3 weeks ago but I presume I now just wait for a call from them. Is there anything else I can do in the meantime tawards it.

Undertake a few mock exam stalks with an assessor or someone experienced if ya can. The assessment is everything you would normally be doing any way. Treat every outing until your assessment as an assessment.

A lot is made of the DSC2, in my opinion its quite simple and straight forward. Happy to talk through my experience more if you wish.

It’s not an assessment as the witness isn’t there to test he simply is noting what you are doing.
When I did it I just kept that in mind and acted the same as usual when stalking but just was very mindful of hygiene and safety. I always am but just made it very obvious.

I Neck shot a Red stag on my DSC2, it was facing me and it was stood in an awkward place. My assessor wasn't keen on the idea, however I was sure to explain why I'd done it, it was a safe shot and I carried everything else out correctly in line with best practice and I passed. You should stalk how you would if you were on your own, that's the point of the assesment.

I'm in a similar position. Completed my witnessed stalk on 28/5. Now just waiting to set up a call with my Assessor. The "portal" sounds great but as far as I can tell it serves almost no purpose at all.

I had a call from my assessor last week and said I found it very confusing. The PDFs he said are so they can’t be edited by anyone other than the person that created them. I don’t know as don’t really understand computer lol.
Anyway it now shows 100% complete on that pie chart and got an email to say I’m done.
My assessor and witness were really good but the portal was confusing.

Yep. It went from 0 to 100% in one day so pointless

I use an e-portfolio at work loads, I can see how the DSC2 one is set up, but not used as intended.
Seems a very feature rich system that is a bit unnecessary.

I found the portal set up, a little over kill. there may be more uses on the other side for the assessors. I also had some technical issues getting my final report uploaded. I had multiple delays and emails to get the ball rolling.

In my opinion, the DSC2 is jus the practical element of your driving test. There is alot made of the DSC2, and the newbie could appear a real challenge. The portal, only adds to that.

Yes I agree. You go into it thinking it’s going to be really challenging but really if you stalk already and as long as you are hygienic, everything else is from DSC1 learning. The portal is just stupid. The hardest part of DSC2 is the computer stuff

The computer element of the portfolio - adobe, PDF etc was a total nightmare for me. None of my devices would download the additional info and caused some stress at the beginning. Really enjoyed things once that was sorted.

Does someone know how many times you need to be witnessed nowadays? I was under the impression that it was only one but checking the BASC flow chart it seems to still be three?

Its only once mate. As long as you complete the tasks obviously. There will be some you you can't do as stuff like follow up if wounded and things but your Assessor will verbally ask you them sort. He will have a few questions he wants to ask.
