DSC2. Why?

at the moment you don't need dsc2,its only a piece of paper right? you've been stalking 30+ years and never needed it!! well times change and we live in "testing" times, for everything!! Ive been a Hgv driver for 25+ years and now Ive been told i have to pass a driver cpc (certificate of professional competence!) or NOT!! drive any longer!! ime thinking the last 25+ years have i done it wrong??? same with stalking..have i done it wrong?? the fact is ime not botherd anymore!! if someone says do this for hgv, then i will do it to prove i can,and to continue driving!! the same with deer stalking!! i am willing to prove i can!!! the thing is the last driving assessment i was on i was asked when i first drove a hgv? i replied and he said my god i wasn't even born then! the fact is it doesn't matter how long you've been doing it,but can you??? having said that my old saying is "THOSE THAT CAN..DO!!!....THOSE THAT CANT..TEATCH!!.."

i think with the gun crimes of late it wont be long before it will be part of the conditions of your FAC.along with ground to shoot on .most of us are law abiding and are responsible when it comes to firearms but the few that slip through the net tend to tar us all with the same brush.
the shootings in Cumbria was awful and what the PM said hit the nail on the head,"he was a lawful FAC holder and with that we can not hold others accountable for his actions, the system is stringent enough to obtain a FAC but what we cant do is see into the future and tell if he was going to snap."

however others will view this in such a way that we are all B*STARDS and will snap and go on the rampage.
and they will call for more legislation to be put into place to gain your FAC

The one and only reason is that in my opinion one needs to have formal qualifications to obtain good deer stalking rights on attractive land, as landowners increasingly need to protect their own interest and show 'due diligence' in who they allow to shoot on their land.
Therefore, as an inexperienced stalker with the DSC2 one has an advantage over the very experienced stalker who holds no formal qualifications.

I am old and grey and thought i knew most things regarding stalking, however reading this post and especially shootingduckdog and yorkshireroestalking, you have convinced me to do somthing about it.

I think Lev 2 give the novice a start area of assessment and will if he has a good AW give him a rude awakening at times but for the ones who have been deer stalking its was just another hurdle in the way of there passion Hobie or job. This is the reason why some agree with the Assessment and others don't.
As stated by WS it is not a test.
PS WILLIE GUN GOOD REPLY EVEN IF IT WAS A FEW YEARS BACK LOL

I had been stalking on and off for about 32 years, never able to keep membership on a good permanent ground or syndicate due to a long career in the uniformed services. I did keep my stalking going, by buying stalk days or getting involved in the Deer Management on a few military ranges and training area's depending on where I was stationed at the time. I used to think I would be able to continue as I was, once I retired.
I soon found out that this was not the case and I moved from Scotland when I did eventually retire I found it very hard to get myself some stalking other than paying for the occasional bought day. Most places that I went to were more than happy to hear about my experience but were not willing to allow me to go on the ground unless I had my DSC. I eventually bit the bullet and did the DSC L1 course down at Thetford and have to admit I did learn a lot and enjoyed it to boot. Once I had this cert I got into a small estate with the ruling that I was to register and complete my level 2 within 2 years. I have now completed my level 2 and have managed to get myself a couple of more areas due to having the paper. I would therefor say that in my case I have been able to continue on with my stalking, even after moving 500 miles to a completely new area where I knew no one, due to the fact that I realised I needed to get the paperwork as that is what land owners want to see no matter what practical experience I had.

BB do you realise some of us are older and our eyes struggle at small print any chance you could enlarge you type setting.

its all about your own prefrences i did my level 1 and 2 because 1st i lost my own land and when i treid to go anywhere everybody seemed to want level 1 but once i did my level 1 i was wanting to go on and do level 2 for my own peace of mind.

I have rode a motorbike & Trike/Quad bike and used a chainsaw for over 25 years without injury or incident however this counts for nothing as I don't have a piece of paper.

DSC 2 is the same in its self in doesn't make you a better stalker however in preparing and brushing up on your skills it will help you to improve yourself and your knowledge.
And the main thing it provides for landowners etc is confidence in your ability as you have been accessed according to a laid down set of nationally recognised performance criteria.

Its a sad day out in the field if you cannot learn something new.

Thanks mate thats beter. Till hill still only require Lev 1 i am told but i am sure it will not be long before lev 2. Certainly if they are managing a bit for FC then it will be LEV 2

Well in 2004 after shooting deer for for then nearly 20 years I thought I knew plenty and nobody could show me a better gralloch.
Well was i wrong, Now guiding professionally I still see bits of other peoples work I will adopt.
If nothing else I learned to look around and keep learning.
Which I certainally am.
Those who say they don't want it because theres nothing in it for them to learn I say B****CKS. NO ONE knows it all.
What are you frightened off other then meeting people and expanding your knowledge, (other than the cost of course).

And one quote sums this right up, it's listed just below........

I'll be getting DSC2, why? because there are 17616 people with DSC1 and 3845 people with DSC2 that makes me better than 13771 deer stalkers. Obviously, I'm not but to a prospective landlord of a deer stalking lease, it certainly looks that way. If I spend say, £600 getting DSC2, I may save that in cheaper leases because I'm 'qualified'. It might mean that I get an FC lease on my doorstep, If all of a sudden a dream job comes up that I'd love to get and it requires DSC2, then I'll be able to apply. I don't care if it's not worth the paper it's written on, if it's available and it makes me look better than the next man (which, in the deer industry, DSC2 does), then I'll get it.

I did it because I needed to add AW to my list of services for the business. That said You do brush up a lot on things that you may have taken for granted.
