Hi I have a new duck pond and was wondering if any of you guys have any ideas how to attract ducks to a new pond I have put some wheat in it but was thinking of putting decoys in or is there any better ideas to get them coming in thanks Barry

Dont worry they will soon find it and if there is some food they will be back, nothing more greedy than a mallard.

Could try some call ducks not sure how you would get hold of them

Feed and they will come, try some frost damaged spuds. Don't over feed though as this can cause untold problems. I'm sure theres a best practice guide for ponds on the BASC website.

Get the habitat right for the ducks species you want. I have spent 4 days on working round two of my ponds this summer. I have spent time improving the cover in some areas and thinning it out in others to direct the flightlines into the pond whilst increasing the cover round the shallow margins. I have been out 3 times and had good numbers coming in. I dont feed any of the ponds as they are all managed for conservation reasons so feeding wheat into them would be a no no. Last week 3 of us went out and shot a brace each in about 45minutes. Also dont overshoot the ponds I wont shoot mine any more than once a fortnight.

If you know anyone with poultry ask them as they often know of people with call ducks and quite often birds that aren't of show quality will get there necks wrong so you'd probs get them for free , if you don't know any1 with poultry have a look at any of the local shows etc you'll find some1 there for sure with some :) hope this helps

Wheat sinks and always goes sour in the water barley floats. Your local pheasant breeder may also have ducks and if not they will know others that do. You can put ducks down the same but they are not as good as shooting wild ones but the ones you put down will call in wild ones.

Im in the process of of doing a similer thing, I have start throwing some corn around the waters edge to help encourage ducks, I was also told to add a floating island but have tried this yet.
call ducks are a good idear to.
good luck

They'll eat pretty much anything. We've been feeding with apple pumice from cider making, spuds and anything else we can get our hands on.
Only problem is the effin swans!

Planting a decoy in certainly helps to establish a pond but ducks tend to find there way just be patient, barely also send to work better! My best pond this year is just a splash at the edge of a stubble field were as the established ponds are shooting just ok

Try and avoid lamping near your ponds if you can...

I went and put more feed in today didn't see any left from other day as I said there was a few in last nite so do I just wait on them finding it or do I try a call bird also has anyone used oilseed rape

I can also get some tatties of a friend on a farm but what do you guys do to break them up before putting in and will they eat sprouts

If you have seen birds on it and the foods gone just keep feeding it, more will turn up especially if it's mallard feeding.

Dunno about the sprouts but tatties are OK, don't over do it though unless your pond has running water through it, they don't demolish the tatties like barely and eventually they turn the water foul. I used tatties for a while but only in small quantities and sliced through them with a spade first in a bucket, if I was feeding with barely as well though I'd tend to notice that the tatties were always left in favour of the Barely. Next time your cooking just save your own tatty peelings, you don't need much.

Was there much in the way of feathers on the pond the next morning? Have you tried turning up first thing to see how many birds you lift?

No I never went in the morning I also didn't see feathers on it but as I said with the lamp there was a few on it am not 100% many

wild ducks are like geese they feed on the land through the day and usually fly back on an evening for safety. After bad rainfall you will find good evening shooting on flashes they seem to love them. You only tend to find them all day if you put some down or have a large established mass of water
