ear protection - wich Peltor?

I now have the small cheap type of Peltor. On the shooting range I notice it clould be better. Would the Peltor Sport Tac be sufficient to shoot rifles both oudoor and indoor? Would the Peltor Optime III be more protective?

I find the Peltor to be first class you can even get an adaptor to plug a two way radio to them.

I use my Peltor sport tac for all my hunting and range work. Shooting the running moose range the fireing point is in a hut with a open hatch on the front. Ive used my Sport tac for 5+ years now and am very pleased with them.

I think I own the Optime I . On Friday I visited a range where a man was firing a 308 with muzzlebrake. I was standing behind him and my eardefenders certainly where not strong enough. So I noticed I needed some better ones. I already have tinnitus and don't want to make it worse.

Another +1 for the Sportac's , i have had a pair for about 4 years (and i suffer from intermittent tinitus ) and even standing / shooting from the hut on the BSRC range at the running deer they are fully effective , well worth the money.

Be sure to check if they fit your head.
The sport-tac I have does not fit my head, they are to shallow and lets noise in behind my ear.
I have no issue with the electronics though.

Just to throw another into the mix... having owned both brands, MSA Sorodin are much better buil out of much better materials, are much less bulky, much more comfy and the sound quality and electronics are superb! If you didn't know you had them on, you wouldn't know you had them on (if you know what I mean!)

A new brand to me. They aren't cheap. Which of the following do you recommend?

SportTac are very effective, and if you turn up the volume you have better hearing than without. I like this.

The suppression of the shot is excellent and they volume comes back instantly, so I have heard the bullet strike clearly on many of occasions (though only on targets so far).

Build quality seems good, the circuit boards are conformally coated to waterprof them, and mine have been drenched during a very wet four hour sit in a high seat with an unmoderated rifle.

In the US they are called Tactical Sport, which is useful if searching E.G. ebay or amazon, where the going rate is £90, i.e half the price of the MSA Sordin which are doubtless even better.

If you get a set, put a label with your initials on each side, every other shooter at my clubs seem to have a pair, and it would be easy to muddle them up.

You can get silicone gel filled ear pads for even better comfort and fit. Might solve the problem for the chap who's set don't fit. I'll be buying a set when the originals need replacing.

They are military kit, designed for tank command.. built as you would expect military kit to be built too... Solid metal and heavy duty polymer build, no flimsy plastics...

The electronics are amazing... suffer from wind noise as do they all but not as bad as peltor in my opinion... the sound level is kept constant, so rather than cutting off when a gun goes off, they keep everything at a constant level.. everything happens instantaneously, you don't know anything is/has changed... also, the sound quality is remarkable.. as I said in my last post, if you didn't know you had them on, you wouldn't know you had them on!
Waterproof mics, stupidly long battery life, auto shut off, adjustable volume, input socket for radio or walkie talkie... Also, don't cause (me anyway) any mount problems due to their low profile design.

I sound like a fanboi LOL.. yes, they are expensive.. I've had mine for 2 years now and wouldn't swap them for anything!

I have a pair of peltor sportac, had them about 5 years now and they have been great, I clay shoot a couple of times a month and used them on the range at Bisley the other week. I got them off Ebay from the states and paid about £60 I think.
I would definitely reccomend them.

I personally prefer custom moulded ear plugs much more comfortable for shooting in especially when using shotguns also no pressure or weight on your head, I get a headache from them squeezing on my head no worries with the moulded ones, use them on my motorbike as well top drawer.....

Yes but for electronic custom in ear moulded units you will pay significantly more than for the best over ear versions..

Mine are not electronic and are perfectly adequate for use down the range can hear people talking no problems.....

I have been told, but i can not confirm this that the in the ear plugs are not as good at protecting your hearing longterm as the standard over the ear type; i'm lead to belive that the sound waves can travel through the skull since hole that the ear hole (I'm technical me) goes through is not protected. does that make sense?

Had a pair of "Green Leopard" ear plugs and while I thought they were quite good they gave me sore ears the next day so I lashed out and bought a pair of MSA Sordin Supreme Pro X with the gel pads. Until you have tried these you won't believe how good the are. Expensive, yes at £210 they are but your hearing is irreplaceable. Would never use anything else.
