Favourite films - and why.

The link I provided is to an article also written by Krakaeur, written in 2016 and an update on his 2013 analysis. It's worth a read, as in it he discusses some more recent research to definitively prove the reason for McCandless' death, rather than his initial theory that it was toxic alkaloids from seeds of the wild potato plant that caused his death.

I think from the remains - either way it wasn’t a nice way to go!

It must have been terrible - alone and stuck miles from civilisation, with no means of communication, and with your health deteriorating to the point where you no longer even have the energy even to get up and forage for the food you so desperately need.

As @zambezi says though, Chris McCandless was consciously pursuing his quest. One can only hope that he was reconciled to the end he finally encountered.

Thanks for the link Willie. For those that can't be bothered to follow the link, I have cropped the synopsis:

So many great films already mentioned that I like.

I will add:

Dancing with wolves, great acting and direction by Costner
Green book, not what I was expecting coming from the part played by Viggo Mortenson
A river runs through it, introduced me to the beauty of Montana, and of course after that film I had to fish there, and hunt!

Cheers

Richard

Ooofff! All of those are excellent.

I agree on Green Book - Viggo Mortensen is a very underrated actor. Still can’t believe he’s the same actor as in GI Joe and Eastern Promises.

The final fishing scene in ARRTI takes some beating!

Zulus been mentioned before but I’ll have to put in a vote for that film myself. Amazing story, only made more amazing as it’s true.

As an aside, I also like the opening scenes of Gladiator for their similarity to Zulu......

The Princess Bride - genuinely funny and amazing fencing

The Three and Four Musketeers (the 70s ones with Michael York, Charlton Heston, Oliver Reed, Christopher Lee etc) the screenplay is just an excellent interpretation of Dumas’s story, and really captures the squalor as well as the wit.

Armadillo - Danish documentary film following a rotation at the FOB of the same name in Afghanistan. The Danes consistently but a battle group into the UK brigades on Telic and Herrick and this is about as good a look at the role UK forces played in Helmand as you are going to get (despite not actually being British!). If you are at all interested in military history it is a rewarding watch.

Hurt Locker - Bigelow made me feel like I was there. Intense

Road to Perdition - Daniel Craig shows acting versatility playing a not so smart son of a gangster. Newman and Hanks do fine performances

Lots of films here that I love, but I know I have one film that makes me cry every time.i watch it: Spartacus, by Stanley Kubrick. The scene at the end, when he's dying on a cross on the Via Appia, and his wife presents him with his baby and comforts him by announcing that he's free, not a slave. I don't really know why it grabs me like that but it does, and has done for maybe 30 years now, way before I had kids so it's something else...
