Federal is Launching 6.5 Creedmoor + Peak Ammunition - 80,000 PSI !

Been there. Handloads. Speciality brass. PRC loads in a CM. Whoop de doo. Lots of care and a bit of stupidity.

Went back to a 120gr at 3000fps. A bit extra steam from the Saami++ loads but so what? As the old teuchter stalker said ‘maist o’ it gauns in the heather’

No free lunch and I preferred the full loaded CM with low recoil to the barking pseudo PRC. Pays your money…

What influence will high pressure loads have on felt recoil and noise?
It’s a linear relationship. More powder equals more pressure which equals more recoil. A typical 6.5 PRC round using 120grain bullets will produce 14-16 joules of recoil energy, according to Gordon’s Reloading Tool, while a ‘fast’ load (<3000fps) will be be upwards of 17 joules. As for noise, it’s hard to say: loud is loud!

So I thought I'd run a few numbers through Gordons Reloading Tool to see what the additional recoil would be from a charge generating 80,000 psi. Given the performance comparison with a 6.5 PRC I thoguht i'd run the numbers to see how the recoil compared and what an 80,000 psi charge in 6.5 PRC would look like. I then wondered how the CM + Peak would compare with a larger calibre such as 300 PRC. Here's the numbers.

The "starting load" and max load" charges are taken from the Vihtavuori reloading tool while the "over charge" load reflects the volume of powder required to generate a max pressure of 65,000 psi and the "+ Peak" load is the powder required to create a max pressure of 80,000 psi (or thereabouts). These figures assume a rifle with a 24 inch barrel weighing 5400 grams.

If one of the appeals of a 6.5 CM is the low recoil, why get so excited about the + Peak?

data is missing mate

Maybee federal can make a new cip chamber make it with a 7.8” twist? Just like tikka/sako dont chamber 6,5-55 They chamber 6,5-55 Scandinavian.

So much more pressure, faster barrel wear, higher costs, and might not be reloadable? Thank you no, I lack a Creedmoor as is and this will not make me purchase one.

There’s been a lot of interest in 6.5 C’moor from the military. This is why we have the current debacle with 6.5s on military ranges.

Has Federal just outsourced their R&D to the shooting public…?
