Just picked up a rather nice Franz Sodia combination - 16 gauge/ 7x65R combo. Turns out is was made same year as me which is an added bonus. Can not wait to try it. may even have a gold crest on the pistol grip !

Welcome to the club. I have a Joseph Hambrusch also of Ferlach made one also in 16 / 7x65r. It’s my go to hunting gun.

Enjoy yours. You probably know already, but Combination guns tend to walk their shots high as the rifle gets warm. It’s a thin barrel so heats up very quickly. As its soldered to the top the bottom expands more than the top. First shot is bang on target, second quick is 4 to 5cm high, third about 10cm. Fourth or fifth - who knows.

This is a non issue when hunting. Make the first shot count. There is usually plenty of time for a second shot.

On the range - don’t bother shooting rapid groups. You will just cross. Shoot one shot, wait a few minutes shot another. Just take your time.

And hold them firmly. Think double rifle, use your fore hand to hold things in firmly and rest you hand on a rest. 7x65r had enough recoil that you need to manage it. If you don't, bullet goes high. I have learnt this the hard way have missed some easy shots.

Enjoy it. And ignore all the rubbish talked the tacticool brigade with bipods, moderators, tvs and coffee machines all attached to their chassis rifle. Take them for a wee walk up a little swiss hill. You will ascend with a mild raise in heart beat. They will stop after 100m!!

Thanks for the advice - I thought I would hear back from you.
The rifle is just a lovely thing to hold, I can not get over the level of craftsmanship. Should also be practical for boars as I will have a slug in the 16 gauge.

There’s o e almost exactly like this, Zeiss, claw mounts and all, sitting in the borders gunroom for little money. Sadly, in 8x57r/12g.

They generally shoot slugs to the point of aim, perhaps not exactly but within minute of boar at 40 yards. Mine will do rifle and slugs into a small ipad at 40 yards. In the UK we don’t use slugs very much - other practical shotgun shooting sports. They have to be on your FAC and we are only allow 12 bore for use on deer. For boar I have an Einstecklauf in 7x65r to make it into a double rifle.

That would be perfect for me !, shipping costs out of UK have now killed my chance to export ( I did in the past from Holts). I tried to see the gun on website but could not find it - what was the price ?

I am now looking for an Einstecklauf as well - was it easy to fit and regulate ?, even been thinking of a 222 or similar to have a roe / boar rifle - BergStutzen as they say here

It’s a gunsmithing job, as it needs to be machined to fit. A muzzle end it needs to be a slide in with no play fit, at the breech end the rim needs to flush with the gun. There is then a conical bit to adjust to the forcing cone. On some you need to cut a slot on the extractor to a small additional extractor. I did a post on here - do a search.

My thoughts on a 222 or similar small calibre. Why bother. I don’t know of any foxes, rabbits etc that have a different end result to a 7mm or a 222, indeed suspect a 7mm is less destructive than a rapidly expanding 222. And for birds, rabbits etc that you want to eat a 16 bore does a very good job.

An EL adds another 1 lb if not more in weight. Whilst the are removable, they are not slip it in, take a shot take it put again type thing. It’s put it in and leave it gor the season. Regulation - there are adjustment screws on the muzzle. Its a process that’s a bit of pain and takes several cartridges. They should be repeatable when you remove and replace, but in practice it takes a few shots for them to settle down.

I have an article in one of the double gun journals where a gentleman made up some low velocity light bullet loads using trail boss in 7x65R given a 120grain bullet trundling along at 1200 fps which shot to the same zero albeit at a much closer range. I think this an interesting idea, but have never got around to bothering doing so, so its not that good an idea. And to be honest, a shotgun cartridge will have the same effect out 40 odd yards.

not getting on with your iPad then? 😁
Not an ipad, but last PC laptop I had was an utter pain. Took it out into the garden and double tap from double 7x65r. Felt a lot better and been running apple ever since. But the prices now!!!!! But getting way off topic.

Think it’s about £2k, but it’s never going to sell, so I’m sure under serious negotiation

Got mine for about 800 pounds - seemed a bargain , little used, hand detachable sidelocks, gold pistol grip cap. locks up like a safe - I just hope it can shoot otherwise I will just have to look at it !!!

I would not worry. Those Ferlachers are well and shoot well. Perhaps not 1/2 MOA at 1000m (which is of course what you need these days) but you will be able kill a Roe buck at any distance you want to shoot it. I know a rock that is at 300m from the firing point. Its about the size of a Roe Kill zone. I am shooting the RWS 140gn HIT ammo zeroed about 4cm high at 100m. Hold on top the rock and hitting it every time with mine. And that’s with a 6x42. I compared this the other evening with a Zeiss 4x32 - really no real difference in terms of ability to hold on a hare at 200m.

How much do these beauties weigh? :)

The Rangers of alto Adige in Italy also use bochbüchsflinte guns, although less beautiful ones. Besides the shorter and handier length of the arm itself, it allows them to use the shotgun barrel for animal control, in areas where the safety distances will not permit the rifle to be used.

I did think they looked like nifty guns then, and I am not sure it can be gotten in a much better caliber set up than this either. 🐗🐐
Congratulations with the gun @Dhindes and let us know hot it handles and shoots :)
