First time with pistols.

.45acp was a major calibre and 9mm a minor in practical pistol shooting so the .45acp was popular with us competitors. Had a S&W model 52 which was 38sp wad cutter only for police pistol very accurate target pistol and perfect for the discipline, was particularly sad to part with it. had colt python also and 9mm browning. Took ages to get my compensation payment. Pistol shooting was very popular and the ban a big nail in the coffin of shooting and we continue to allow governments to add further nails.

Hoping to be getting back over soon,

Always thought it a total disgrace how “politicing” at a stroke removed the opportunity for a lot of people to engage in their chosen sport.
Over in NI we thought for sure that it would go that way for us too, however for other “political reasons”, it never happened and the sport continues to flourish with many new clubs opening since the GB ban.
Funny old world….

What’s the possibility of the clubs there having guest days so that those on the mainland could visit to have a go?
I know my clubs guest days (England) are well attended by people interested in trying the sport.

Often thought of doing just that. I shall enquire and return….

You could play George C Scott with another one as a pair!🤣
And they were ivory grips not mother of pearl. It is said that ivory being denser than wood offers advantage in adding weight to the rear of the pistol and eve when wet is apparently non-slip. For we must remember that the factory option withe Colt Model 1873 were "gutta percha" type grips that in the UK we might call "vulcanite". Patton himself had competed in the 1912 Olympic Games in Modern Pentathlon and place fifth.

I have shot pistols quite a bit over the years, 22 Target, 9mm Glocks, a little Colt 32 ACP, 357 and 44 Magnum, and my favourite was a Mauser Broomhandle. But for me they don’t really do anything. I much prefer to shoot a shotgun or a rifle. I have lived in parts of Africa where pistols are carried by some for personal protection. Frankly if I need personal from a Bandit totally out of it drugs with an AK47 or a Panga, a little 9mm or 32 ACP is not really go to much other than irritate and inflame the situation. It’s why, when I needed one with such threats being very real, I had a double 12 loaded appropriately by my bed.

Saying all of the above, I see absolutely no reason why those who want to use a pistol shouldn’t use one. It makes no sense that the likes of @Foxyboy43 over in Northern Ireland can continue to enjoy them.

And as @enfieldspares rightly pointed it was a Tory Government that instigated the major bans on pistols.

I miss pistol shooting and would gladly hunt with a suitable one.
After the ban I had to be content with puny air.

Spent many a summer evening in the 1969s laying a field with a view of a big warren shooting half grown rabbits for food.
Ruger 22 rf, think it was Mk IV but could have been ealier that came with a heavy target barrel, later the barrel was swapped (By Tom Neild) for the standard tapered barrel.
Finished with a telescopic sight and Parker Hale moderator.
Happy days.
Ken.

Those double twelves ( (Even if made into a Whippet) are still not the best for CC!

A friend lost his livelihood because all his customers seemed to drift away from his indoor pistol only shooting club for some reason.

Aye - I have mentioned this already on another earlier thread. A gentleman in a large gunshop up north approached me when he heard my accent and introduced himself as the proprietor. He went on at some length about the then recent loss of his pistols and concluded by saying that the saddest thing he had ever done was the night before he handed them in when he put a half inch drill down each of his thirteen pistols - so that no-one would ever benefit from having them.
I really felt for him….

Channel islands and isle of man still have pistols also.

As said the ban was about votes as simple as that.

Yep,
No knowing what might happen to them once you hand them in.
Anyone know whether they were intended to be destroyed or possibly sent to N Ireland or Isle O Man?

I remember in 1983 an uncle of mine died and the police went to his house and took away several shotguns.
My dad (His brother) rang me and told me what happened and I went to the police station.
I asked for my uncles guns and was told I could only have them if I had a SGL.
I produced mine and the desk Sarg. disappeared in the back and came back with a few guns (All crap really) and some ammo including .410 loaded with slug!
One gun was missing and I informed the Sarg. who disappeared again, only to return an tell me ‘yes, there is another gun but one of the bobbies wants to keep it!
No thanks, he then went and brought it out.
It was a long recoil Browning 12 gauge.
The condition of that was not to a standard I’d want and I would gladly have given it to the Bobby had he asked instead of trying to con us.
We to them to Towers in Rochdale the following day and go 50£ for the bunch.
Dad shared that with his brother and 2 sisters.
