First track for my girl Squill today! Absolutely over the moon, as she hasn't been the easiest dog to manage.
Got a call on the radio from one of the stalkers out with a client to say that they'd shot a hind in a forested area and she'd run. Visibility wasn't great due to patchy mist, and they couldn't find her anywhere. Did I want to try the dog?
Took me about an hour to go back for Squill and then climb up to locate the stalking party, but eventually I got there. I could see blood at the shot site, but initially Squill was too excited about everything else to take much notice so I just let her run about for a bit to let off steam before taking her back to the shot site. This time her nose went straight down so I told her "find it" and she set off like a train! Nose down the whole time and with real purpose - no doubling back or faltering, just ploughing straight ahead. After about 100 yards I still hadn't seen any sign of the deer so I was beginning to think that it was all a failure and that she was just running for the fun of it. Then we came to a patch of blood where the hind must have fallen and got up again, and then in about another 50 yards she took me right up to the dead hind! She was so pleased with herself and I was so pleased with her!
I reckon a one hour old 150 yard track when none of us had any idea of the location of the deer was a pretty good first effort.
She got a fresh kidney for a reward, and was still trying to claim that deer as her own when we got back to the larder!
