Fitness in the field

For context I'm 29 years old and already go to the gym frequently - I'm mainly a after a targeted exercises/routines that will help me with this. As much as I've thought of dragging a bunch of weights around at the gym, I don't think the other users would approve.

This however is (along with everyone else's contribution, but especially this) extremely good advice

Do they not have a weight sled at your gym?

Does your gym do spin classes? Fantastic way of developing your CV fitness and also strength endurance in your lower body. If you get off that bike and your legs aren't jelly, you've done it wrong 😉

Been on a similar journey
A better diet and hydration are quick wins
I am in my 50's and found a combo of lifting weights, personal training for conditioning and yoga asanas / stretching to work for me. Doing things that i struggled to in my forties.

Hi all,

I’m looking to improve my overall fitness this includes for my stalking, especially for longer days on the ground. I manage fine on flatter woodland terrain, but when the elevation starts climbing, I definitely feel it more than I’d like - especially when dragging.

For those of you who regularly stalk in the hills, are avid gym goers or personal trainers -
  • What kind of training or exercises have you found most effective?
  • Do you focus more on cardio, strength, or a mix of both?
  • Any practical tips for building up endurance?
  • And if you’ve made noticeable improvements, how long did it take before you felt the difference in the field?

I’m not aiming to be an ultra athlete — just fitter, more comfortable, and able to enjoy a full day without feeling like I’ve been run over the next morning.

Would really appreciate any advice, routines, or personal experiences from those who’ve been there and improved their fitness.

Thanks in advance!
When you get to being in your twenties, head off for a season to where the brown lines merge a little, eg Fannich, Wyvis, Knoydart or Torridon, etc.

You’ll never look back!

Fannich - ask for Ruaraidh!

I've been doing Body Pump a couple of times a week for the last 3 or 4 months and I'd say the results are obvious. I'm far more toned and feel a lot stronger. These are high rep exercises but you choose the weight levels. Classes follows the same format concentrating on different muscle groups, starting with squats, weight bar behind your neck, narrow stance and wide stance, then chest, back, shoulders, biceps triceps, lunges and abs. It's a tough work out. I've always been a cyclist and swimmer with some Pilates thrown in but I think Body Pump is more relevant to the strength and fitness requirements of a stalker.

Basically, dont beast the **** out yourself as you will break....

80:20 rule.

80% zone 2 runs/cycles/swims to build up low level CV, grow blood vessels, increase red blood cells

20% beasting - intervals weather that be bike, run, swim and vari it up so hills, tracks fartlek etc.

Start at 5 miles a week is running and add 10% each week distance wise to prevent injury.

Same with anything else really.

As for gym workouts plenty to go at but want strength without muscle mass as your cardio goes down the drain.

Don't be one of them people that runs with weight its an awful idea..unless you need to actually do it for your job... already booked in the knee and hip replacements 😂

Treadmill on an incline. Keep doing and it gets easier, then the hills get easier. General cardio is needed however before you concentrate on legs/hill work.

I used to run hills and marathons, sadly no more, need to lose a few kg to at least get back into the hill runs, marathons are of no interest anymore.

If you’re only 29 and already frequent a gym I think I go and get an health MOT to make sure you are basically healthy.

Mental strength and determination is what you need. Everything else will follow after that.
Oh and Tim this picture is not a stolen stock photograph off the Internet. Like the one you used...20251120_181132.webp

You’ve got the spelling wrong for “Séamus”

Excellent post! I once posted a thread before about folk being real particular, needing all the best kit and themselves being the weakest link.
Strangely alot of folk in this game seem to be on the big side!? Check out the clothing for sale in classified if you doubt me.
Im take the time to go to the gym three times a week, resistance training is probably the no 1 exercise for longevity, stronger muscles are crucial if you plan on getting the most out of life.

Stalking being my profession, I consider being fit and strong as important as practice at the range, maintaining kit and training my dogs.
