Fitness in the field

I do advocate physical training for deerstalkers. Go for a mixture of strength and cardio training. HIIT is good. I do aone 4-5k jog a week with HIIT mixed in. Cycle once or more at 14k. And get another weekly workout+ dragging out deer you shoot, invariably up a hill and in cover. You will be fit.

Yoga is good too to keep your joints flexible and to minimise injuries.

For context I'm 29 years old and already go to the gym frequently - I'm mainly a after a targeted exercises/routines that will help me with this. As much as I've thought of dragging a bunch of weights around at the gym, I don't think the other users would approve.

This however is (along with everyone else's contribution, but especially this) extremely good advice

Lower body and back exercises are important for the hill. Alongside steady state running/walking. Ideally with hills involved and on uneven ground to acclimatise your ankles and knees to the added difficulty of not being on tarmac.

If not already done work in 4 sets of 8-10 reps of the following exercise:

leg focus (walking up hills)
-Barbell squat
-Weighted lunges
-Hip thrusts
-Calf raises
-Box step ups with dumbbells

Back focus (dragging and general strength)
-Barbell deadlift
-Bent over barbell row
-Pull ups
-Romanian Deadlifts

Also include a range of core exercises (to help stabilise yourself on rough ground and when dragging)

This is not to disregard other exercises but these simple ones will reap the most benefit for hill stalking in my non PT logic.

PS. Don’t forget to throw in some bench press and bicep curls (the hinds loves it)

Like my Dad used to say, labours bring the bricks and muck when the bricklayer shouts...
"Sheamus" more muck"

What a soft touch wearing gloves........but not surprised🤣 Your new nickname "Turtle Doves" Gloves

"Sheamus Soft Hands" lol
Why do you always have to put others down? Does it make you feel bigger or better about yourself?

Many sites require gloves at all times now.

Why did he mention my Dad in one of his replies (seems a thing people are only to quick to try and use peoples family on SD)
You again are quite happy to judge 🤫 quote.

Yes you do with out knowing the facts, just say what you really want to say instead of nipping at my heals it would be much better then you might get it off your chest. I don't mind one bit ;)

I’ve already said it, plenty of times.
Yes and twice was about my late Mother so you fit in well alongside others who take a swipe at peoples family as the way of having a dig, the PM chats I had with Bugsy, he has you measured up quite well. 🤫
You never did answer the question I asked you a little while ago which was "What has it got to do with you or anyone else who people live with"
That part has never been in your answers I’ve already said it, plenty of times.

Nah, Tim knows everything about everything, especially how things should be done and he’s better at being a man and being a stalker than everyone else too.

As I have posted multiple times now, I wasn't aware that your mother had passed and as soon as I found out I PM'd and apologised, you really don't need to keep bringing up every exchange we have but you do.

I have also answered the other question, you just choose to ignore it! As the post above you come across as seeing yourself as better than everyone at pretty much everything, always ready to run others down, moan about their lack of commitment etc. yet as a middle aged man you still lived at home with your parents. You don't have experience of the pressures and responsibilities of having a wife and children which changes peoples' priorities and only ever see things from your own, very narrow, point of view.

Multiple people have PM'd me about you and the way you come across on line, I just don't need to shout about it to make myself feel better.

Knees, hips, ankles - squats, squats and more squats. If you’ve a step box or step at your gym, step ups with as much weight as you can manage 6-8 reps, 3-5 sets a few times a week.

And give Freeforester a hand with his drive 😁

Yes, I’m a big advocate of squats, generally combined with a lot of walking or a couple of 5ks per week. I would caveat this with don’t overdo the weight and stick to something you can squat for multiples on sets. I was doing 1 rep maxes about 2 years ago and hurt my hip which now needs replacing. I was as fit as I’d been for years and that was mainly due to squats and short runs. Just don’t get too macho and stick to sensible weight (especially as you get older)

Hills - find one and go up and down it.

Randy Newberg on his YouTube channel did a number of features on building fitness for hunting.

For stalking you want both strength and stamina. A strong core is the basis of this. Boxing training would provide a lot of the strength and stamina and as a 29 year old not an issue. And it will take off unnecessary weight. What you will also need to work on is long term all day ability to just keep plodding on, to cover miles of rough ground at a good speed but whilst working at a speed you can carry on talking.

Then having the strength to handle large dead deer, dragging them, get them into argo, onto quads, lardering getting into pick ups etc.

And then do it all again tomorrow.

My son is 43 and I have 2 grand children in Norfolk :old: so again you are way off the mark again.
As I choose to look after my parents that is my business and nothing to do with you, when Mum passed away then my attention turned to Dad until he passed away here at home with me and my sister were with him.
So AGAIN what has it got to do with you how people run their lives.
When did you work out (bellow) that part is true so shut up lol
"You don't have experience of the pressures and responsibilities of having a wife and children which changes peoples' priorities and only ever see things from your own"

You are not admin also I will remind people how you guess (badly) and how you pluck things out of thin air which are not true.

Yet, you always feel the need to comment on how others do things and run their lives.

Pot, kettle, black.

So, after reading this thread, my conclusion for achieving suitable physical fitness for stalking of the deers, is to spend some time throwing toys out of the pram...

Is this part of the suggest fitness regime?

Steps per day was so 2024, it’s 2025 now and rage induced key strokes per minute is the new way to burn those calories.

Must try it myself, the internet rage generated alone must dump lbs in minutes.

Now If we could only harness this renewable power source we might meet our climate change targets 🤔

Thanks boys.

Where did you pluck this from as I see you swerved that

No, it was noted, comment still stands.
